Thanks for help
I've found James and Mary with youngest son Roger and grandaughter Maggie on the 1901 census

Living nest door to daughter Mary Banks at 357 Leigh road

Ancestry has mistranscribed the record to merge 2 families

James at 355 Leigh road  seems to have become a publican at Oak Tree Rest which is  next line to  Tom+ Eliza SANKEY + Millie  of 4 oak road
Roger is a colliery engine  worker age 22
Maggie age 19 is a general servant domestic

im on the lan-opc
site but dont seem to be able to narrow more than 1 parameter

so im just going thru all baptisms at st mary the virgin church leigh from 1875 -1885

may be the wrong church am seeing  family surnames
ive come across before but no HILTONs

+i found baptisms of 3 of the children of Alice  +  Willmot BANKS (painter)at this church
  Earnest 1878  Ada 26 dec 1880  arther 9 jul1882  abode Pennington
modified
That's Mary HILTON s parents in law
So not very close

i should have started with marriages

Thanks kitty also I liked the personal details you gave about life in the pub . Thanks for permission to quote

"Mary Hiltons parents lived and worked in the pub ( its now converted to a Londis Shop now which is a shame) my great grandma Gladys lived there too at some point, but mostly she lived on Oak street. My grandad told me stories that the were really poor, they could see the sky through the roof as they slept in that house, they took it in turns to wear shoes to school as they didnt have enough pairs and the girls in the family had to stand around the table whilst the working men/boys ate and then they had what was left, it was such a hard time for them! Gladys was really gifted with maths and when her and her husband ran a shop she literally added things up by running a pen over the numbers!
