Cross family - Neston Cheshire
« on: Tuesday 28 February 23 16:33 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Cross family:  James Cross born about 1794 and wife Mary and their children.  I have details of most (possibly all) their children but I have one query, more curiosity than anything:

I have found marriages of four of their children (Ellen, Alice, Martha and George), which all took place at St Nicholas at Liverpool.  At first, I thought I must have got the wrong family, but I am fairly sure now that they are all children of James and Mary.

Can anyone explain why the marriages were in Liverpool rather than at Neston?

Yes many marriages from the Wirral were at St Nicholas as it was a far larger church for a larger congregation - and also MANY MANY RELATIVES LIVED IN LIVERPOOL due to there being more work there .
was James a farmer ?

Thanks for that information.  Regarding George and twin James, I am not sure about that.  The baptism record shows they were baptised 10 days apart - Goerge on 1st january and James on 10th.  There is something written under James name and it looks like a date.  I wondered if it was a belated baptism for some reason (there was another james baptised in1832). This is the FS link (hope it works)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6277-HK6?i=453&cc=1469935

These are the baptisms I have found:Ellen 1817, Martha 1819, William 1822, Mary 1824, Alice 1826, Alice 1828, Jane 1830, James 1832, Mary 1835, James 1837, George 1837, Jane 1840, Ann 1844.

St. Nicholas, also known as the “Sailors Church”; was there a sea-going connection with the family? I too have Wirral ancestors who were married there.
