Spiers Family
« on: Tuesday 28 February 23 20:32 GMT (UK) »
I'm searching for information about George Spiers b. approx 1854.  Mother Mary Ann had surnames of Spiers then Hamilton & finally Howie (maiden name unknown)  George lived at 732 Gallowgate St, Calton in 1921.  He signed the death certificate for my GG Grandmother, Frances (Fanny) Lyons in Dennistoun, June 1921 (Fanny's surnames were McGowan, Howie and possibly Hamilton at birth)  On the death certificate, George listed himself as Fanny's half brother.  The only accurate information I've been able to find is what appears on Fanny's death certificate.  Beyond that, I can't find anything about him. There are a couple of George Spiers listed here and there but the birth dates don't match.  Any help anyone can provide is very much appreciated.

Spiers or Speirs was the maiden surname of Frances' mother.

Fanny McGowan or Hamilton married Frederick Lyons in 1896 in Glasgow. Have a look at her marriage certificate. It will tell you the full names of both her parents.

Frances was 62 when she died in 1921, so if that age is correct she was born in 1858-1859.

The 1901 census lists Frederick Lyons, 40 and Fannie Lyons, 43, both born Ireland, living in Glasgow.

Slight sideways look, but Mary Hamilton, other surname Howie, died in Maybole in 1865. Might be worth a look at her death certificate?

Have you found George in the 1921 census?

He is listed in the Valuation Rolls as tenant of No 732 Gallowgate in 1915, 1920 and 1925, surname spelled Speirs not Spiers.

Hi Middletree

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

How much info have you found on Fanny? Did she marry Frederick Lyons in Glasgow in 1896 in Glasgow (St Rollox)? Fanny showing as McGowan on the index. Have you viewed her marriage reg to see what it says about her parents, witnesses names etc?

I thought this might be her 1901 census entry:

Frederick Lyons 40 Head Mason's Labourer b. Ireland
Fannie Lyons 43 Wife b. Ireland

Address: 10 Mason St, Glasgow/ St Rollox

Frederick had been in Glasgow with his family for many years hadn't he (at least from the 1861?). Have you searched for Fanny in the earlier Scottish censuses?

The reason I ask about Fanny is to check whether there were any family members for her in Scotland before she married Frederick.

1891 Census has Fanny McGowan, 33, born Ireland, with children David, Sarah and Georgiana, all born Glasgow.

The births are registered as Gowan not McGowan: David 1880 d 1894, Mary Ann 1882 d 1883, Sarah Waters 1885 and Georgina 1889.

Fanny Hamilton married William Gowan in Glasgow in 1878.

Possible death of William McGowan, aged 35, in Glasgow in 1890.

Couldn't see the entries on SP with them registered as Gowan  ::)

1881:

William McGown 28 Head sawyer, b. Scotland, Gallowayshire
Fanny McGown 23 b. Ireland, Co Derry
David McGown 8 months b. Glasgow

Address:    16 Mossvale St, Paisley

1891:

David McGowan 10 b. Glasgow
Sarah McGowan 5 b. Glasgow
Georgiana McGowan 1 b. Glasgow
William Johnstone 25 Boarder
Owen Murphy 19 Boarder

When daughter Sarah married in Ontario, Canada in 1902, her parents are showing as William McGowan and Fanny HOWIE.

A lot of surnames certainly popping up. Daughter Sarah's marriage in Ontario in 1902 showed her with the middle name of Waters as showing on that clip from births that you have posted...except, as mentioned, mother showing as Howie.

Still no idea where Howie comes into it, though.

Where were Sarah and Georgina in 1901, I wonder?
