(Gallowayshire ???)

;D I never correct transcripts...in case anyone is looking for the entry and needs to see how it has been transcribed!

Monica
FindMyPast also transcribes it as Gallowayshire so it must be in the original. However it gives his occupation as scholar !!

Middletree, you mentioned a possible birth year of 1854 for George. Could it be 1864? I thought this could fit for his birth?

GEORGE SPEAIRS
Mother's maiden name SPEAIRS
1864
622 / 2 / 306
Springburn

From the details on his death reg, this looks like his marriage:

GEORGE SPEIRS
and
ALICE CROSSON
1891
644 / 4 / 37
Calton (Glasgow)

His death reg showed mother Mary Ann marrying an Andrew Howie. From the marriage we have potentially for her, this should have read Joseph. I am wondering if Fanny's father was Andrew Hamilton from some unsourced notes I have seen online?

The IGI has Joseph William Alexander Howie, son of Joseph H and Mary Ann Speirs, born 22 September 1866, and another child, same parent details but born 12 September 1869.

There's a death of Joseph William Howie, 5, in 1874, mmn Speirs, and a death of Joseph William Howie, 2, in 1868, mmn Hendry. Could Hendry be a mistranscription of Howie?

Also a death of Mary Ann Howie, other surname Sp*r*s, mmn Allan, in Bridgeton in 1870.

Then in the 1871 census are Joseph Howie, 34, police constable, born Ireland; wife Jane Howie, 37; daughter Fanny Howie, 13; George Howie, 6; Joseph W A Howie, 1, all born Glasgow.

Joseph Howie married Jane Telford in 1870.

Just looking at that 1871 census entry. Apart from the 'Jane', I do think that is the family as at 1871.

Added: What am I saying   ::) Mary Ann has died in 1870 and Joseph has likely remarried by the time of the 1871 census it would seem.

1881 census: Joseph Howie, 44, wife Jane, 27, son Richard, 7, stepson George Spears, 17.

Joseph Howie and Jane Telford had John Telford Howie, b 27 August 1871 d 1879, and Richard, b 18 May 1873. Also possibly Jane d 1877 aged 3, and Joseph d 1880 aged 2.
