Archibald Baird.
« on: Tuesday 28 February 23 21:35 GMT (UK) »
I'm Researching my 3rd Great Grandfather, Archibald Baird, who according to the 1841 Scottish census, was living in Campsie, Stirlingshire.
What I'm stuck with is his occupation, so wondering if anybody out there can help. Archibald's occupation is Linemit, could this possibly be a linesman?

Hope somebody out there has an answer.
Thanks in Advance.

The actual 1841 image is only available to view via purchase of credits.  What you are looking at is a transcription

1851 he appears to be a shoe maker

Are you using one of Ancestry's notoriously mangled transcriptions?

The FreeCEN transcription has two adult Archibald Bairds in Campsie. One a nailer and the other a tinsmith.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

In 1851 he'd moved to England, Sleaford, Lincolnshire and was a Gardener and Seedsman, so I'm still none the wiser, the Nailer or the Tinsmith I'm unsure about because Archibald would've been 23 in 1841.
Yes, Iam reading it from one of Ancestry's mangled transcriptions.

I think the 1851 shoemaker is a different Archibald Baird.

1841: Silver Row, Falkirk
Archibald Baird, shoemaker, 20
Helen Finlayson, 20
Agnes Baird, 1
all born in Stirlingshire

1851: Burn Bridge, Falkirk:
Archibald Baird, 34, shoe maker
Helen Baird, wife, 35
Thomas Baird, son, 9
James Baird, son, 7
John Baird, son, 5
Josie Baird, son, 3
all born in Falkirk

So it looks as if you can eliminate him from your reach.

You can also eliminate the 1841 nailer, because he is still in Campsie in 1851, aged 56, born Falkirk, with wife and seven children, all born Campsie, and brother James, 52, also a nailer, born Falkirk.

They are Archibald Baird and Isabella Brown, who had
Mary 1825
Thomas 1828
James 1830
Janet Napier 1830
Archibald 1833
Elizabeth 1838
Malcolm 1843
all born in Campsie
