St Mary Islington Workhouse lookup request - George STREAT
« on: Wednesday 01 March 23 17:50 GMT (UK) »
In the 1891 census George Streat (born circa 1824), is 67 year old general labourer [at Reid & Co.'s brewery - but this information does not appear in the census], married, born in Reading, Berkshire was a visitor in  the household of a cooper called George Streat - presumably his brother (RG12 Piece 247 Folio 31 Page 1 Schedule 6)

In the 1901 census he is 77 year old George Streat, married, general labourer born in Reading, Berkshire, an inmate of the St Mary, islington workhouse (RG13 Piece 170 Folio 110 Page 28 Schedule 0)

He died in 1904 at the age of 80 (Registered London, Islington 1904 Q1 volume 1B page 129)

I don't know when he was admitted to the workhouse ... but evidently it was between 1891 and 1901. (Sorry I cannot be any more specific than that: FindMyPast does not have a record of his admission)

If someone wit access to the workhouse records could have a quick look and see if they can find an admission record and - more to the point - an examination transcript I should be exceedingly grateful. I am particularly interested to see what (if anything) he said in his examination about his wife.

There are 10 admissions & discharges for him between 1896 - 1902 which you can view using Ancestry.  Admissions appear to be health related as one says “to infirmary”

Most local libraries provide Ancestry access

Did his wife die in New Zealand ?

Rosie

I do not know for certain, but I presume so.

She emigrated in 1883 with their children (arriving early 1884; one of the children dying of whooping cough during the voyage). He was supposed to follow when he had completed the 30 years' service required to qualify for his pension ... but it appears that he never did!

My third cousin thinks she has identified his wife's death in New Zealand in 1925. His wife was my great x3 aunt.

You see ... this is what I love about Roots Chat ... it's so ... unpredictable.

I ask about Islington workhouse records ... and somebody finds me a grave in New Zealand.

Last admission
St. John's Road Workhouse
George Streat, Labourer, 78, admitted 19 October 1903 from 72 Popham Road (having apparently gone AWOL on 15 Oct and returned)
He was discharged to Highgate Hill Infirmary on 11 Jan 1904.

Highgate record says that George died there on 18 Jan 1904.
Deceased Online free index has a burial of George Street, 25 Jan 1904, presumably at Islington Cemetery.
