Bridestowe Parish - LITTLEJOHNS
« on: Thursday 02 March 23 14:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have traced my family back to William Littlejohns 1836-1878 born about 1836 in Bridestowe parish. Would it be possible to locate a Baptism or Christening record for him?

I believe his farther was John Littlejohns and mother was Jane Edd(s).

I also believe he had many siblings:
Mary 1827
John 1829
Samuel 1832
Thomas 1834
William 1836
Elizabeth 1839
James 1841

Any information would be very much appreciated.

regards

Andy

Do you have a copy of his 1861 marriage cert to Johanna Veale confirming his fathers name?

Hi Carole

Thank you for the information this ties up with what I have and on the marriage certificate 10/04/1861 for William and Joanna(h) their fathers are John Littlejohns and George Veal.

I have linked John to John Littlejohns Bulkworthy born 1803 who married Jane Edd(s) from Crediton which links to the 1851 Census showing them still in Bridestowe

Jane born 1804 widower John having died 1846
James son

From my reply above

James birth reg shows mothers maiden name was Davy

In 1851 Jane is a 43yr old widow of a miner & James is 8.  Address is the same as 1841

1851 William & brother Thomas are both agricultural labourers living in Lewtrenchard

Father - John Littlejohns died March qtr 1850 aged 46 buried 20.3.1850 Bridestowe

How have you linked William to John Littlejohns b Bulkworthy given he does not appear on any census with that birthplace?

How have you established Jane was Jane Edds given that James birth reg shows his mmn as Davy?

There is a marriage in 1851 on freebmd for a Jane Littlejohns  formerly Davis so James birth reg could be a mistranscription

Jane Littlejohns Full Age
Marriage Date:    Dec 1851
Marriage Place:    Bridestowe, Devon, England
Residence Place:    Bridestowe
Religion:    Anglican
Father:    John Davis
Spouse:    John Gerry

In 1861 they are in Cornwall

Elizabeth 1839

Elizabeth's birth reg also shows mmn Davy

Baptism for Jane DAVEY 27 Aug 1803 Crediton Devon.
Parents John and Mary (Marriage 5 Nov 1802 Crediton for John DAVEY and Mary PILE)

I cannot see a marriage for Jane DAVEY to LITTLEJOHNS
BUT, there is a marriage for a Jane DAVY to Robert EDDS in Exeter, 7 Nov 1825. (Looking at a transcript only)

Then the marriage of John Littlejohns and Jane Edds is in April 1827 in Upton Pyne (not far from Exeter). The bishops transcript of the marriage banns, does not give marital status of either person. Both groom and bride were “sojourners”.   John signed, Jane left her mark.
Witnesses - John Webber (Church cleric?) and C A Richardson

Probable burial for Robert Edds in Thorverton 15 Dec 1825 (age 26). Thorverton seems to have been his birth parish also.

The only baptism (that I could find) in Bridestowe for children of John and Jane Littlejohns is for their son John on 4 Oct 1829. Father is recorded as a labourer.
I have searched on Ancestry, FamilySearch and FreeReg.
I have found previously that FindMyPast seems to be better for Devon records.
