1734 Baptism look up request
« on: Thursday 02 March 23 19:43 GMT (UK) »
Francis Palmer was baptised in 1734 in either Roxwell or Willingale Doe. His father was also Francis Palmer. His mother may have been Ann. Could someone please look up the baptism? Thank you.

Closest baptism I can find that matches your details is in Writtle, around 3 miles from Roxwell:

Francis, son of Francis and Anna Palmer, baptised 11th August 1734.

Transcription can be viewed on FreeREG:

A Francis Palmer of "Rittell" married Anne Mason of Wilingale Doe in the bride's parish on 6th October 1728.

You may have to be careful here as there was another Francis Bapt 1734;

FRANCIS Palmer bapt 23 Jun 1734 All Saints, Writtle
Now FreeREG has his Parents as FRANCIS/LUCY but on Anc Essex Bapts has his Parents as SAM/LUCY

I dont have access to image so maybe someone can clear that up ??

Did your Francis Jnr marry Sarah GOWERS 4 Dec 1759 Roxwell?

If so;

FRANCIS/SARAH bapt Roxwell;
SARAH 07 Sep 1760
THOMAS 11 Sep 1763
MARY 08 May 1768
SAMUEL 28 Oct 1770
LUCY 11 Aug 1776 (pos. buried 26 Feb 1787 daug of Francis/Sarah, no age given)

Given the names of their children if the bapt above is to Sam/Lucy I think they may be the right Parents if your Francis married Sarah Gowers.

Trish :)

Marriage;
19 Apr 1730 All Saints, Writtle
Samuel PALMER to Lucia JERVOISE

And just in case Sarah Gowers is the right Marriage;

Burial;
22 Feb 1795 Roxwell, SARAH, Widow*** of FRANCIS Palmer.
So FRANCIS likely buried 21 Oct 1787

Thank you for your replies. There seem to be a lot of Palmer families in the area of Roxwell, Writtle, Shellow Bowells and Willingale Doe, and they seem to favour the same group of forenames, which makes it very difficult to distinguish one family from another.

Yes, I believe that Francis Palmer Jnr married Sarah Gowers in Roxwell in 1759. Sarah's parents were Thomas and Sarah, so if Francis's parents were Samuel and Lucy, that would seem to fit well with the grandchildren's names.

It is strange that Francis Jnr and Sarah Gowers had no child named Francis, although I did find an Essex death for a Francis Palmer in 1770. Perhaps he was the first son, born in 1761 or 1762?
