Spendilow - Stoke On Trent

Hi

I am trying to find out the parents of William Spendilow (as listed in the 1911 census) born abt 1891 in Ashton Under Lyme.  I think he may actually be Frederick William Spendilow - son of Frederick and Emma Spendilow.  They married in 1888, Emma having a maiden name of Wright and being a spinster who lists her father as William Wright.  Frederick William Spendilow’s birth also had a mother’s maiden name of Wright in 1891.

In 1911 he is living in the household of Frank and Rosetta Bailey at 46 Corporation Street, Stoke on Trent along with, I presume, Rosetta’s mother -  Rosetta Thompson.  He is listed as Nephew, so presumably Rosetta (formerly Thompson) is his aunt and Rosetta senior is his grandmother.

I am struggling to link him to the ‘Thompson’ family though, as his mother appears to be a ‘Wright’ rather than a ‘Thompson’.  Can anybody help me find out his family - in particular his mother’s family?

Am assuming this is his probate - died 11 April 1935 - granted to Mary Ann PREECE (wife of Charles PREECE) and Rosetta CHURTON (wife of Joseph CHURTON). A Joseph CHURTON married Rosetta BAILEY in Set qtr 1930 at Stoke on Trent (6b/444).

Doesn't help with relationship. As "nephew", he could equally be related to a sibling of Frank BAILEY, though I can't see a likely candidate there either.

I can see that there is a marriage for Mary Ann Thompson to Charles Preece on 18/04/1892 in Stoke on Trent - father William Thompson; and also on Frank Baileys service record he states he was married to Rosetta Thompson on 6/5/1905 in Stoke on Trent.

I am been wondering if Emma Wright/ Spendilow is actually their sister Emma Thompson, with them all being children of  William Thompson and Rosetta Stretch.

But why would Emma be saying she is a Wright….?

1911 says Ashton Under Lyme  isn't that in Lancashire near Manchester?

Frederick William Spendilow married Rosa Smith in 1919.  Rosa was formerly Frost as she had previously married James Martin Smith in Stoke on Trent in 1912.  I have not found any details associated with the marriage between Frederick and Rosa so sadly cannot confirm fathers names.

However, I have found a baptism of Frederick William Spendilow to a Frederick and Emma in Audenshaw, Lancs on 28th Oct 1891 (born 7th).

Not sure if this is the same person - occupation is the same POTTER, or how common the surname SPENDILOW is. The Frederick SPENDILOW in this article is aged 39 (c1870).

I am not sure if that is the Frederick Spendilow that I am looking for, but I cannot find an alternative - so it’s possible. 

He was married to Emma and they had one child - a son Frederick William born in 1891.  The article seems to mention a daughter in your notes so that does not seem right, I cannot see the original article to check - are any names mentioned?
