Louisa Hilda Dyer
« on: Saturday 04 March 23 14:12 GMT (UK) »
Louisa Hilda Dyer was born on the 14/15th February 1914 in Worplesdon near Guildford. She went to school in Surrey and won a Scholarship to study music and learn to be an opera singer. I am sure she went to school in Guildford and am trying to find out what school would be involved and where the scholarship was for. Her father refused to let her go. Any help gratefully received.

What is your source for the info?    She is on the 1939 register - still single but certainly nothing to do with music

I doubt the type of details you are looking for would be available online

The family were in Lambeth by the time Louisa was 4, then to Aldershot when she was around 7.  They appear to be in Dover area around 1925,  Guildford area in 1927 then Farnham area by 1930.

Do you have any idea when she would have been offered this scholarship

The source was from Louisa herself who was my mum. Dont know how old or what school she went to or when the scholarship was awarded. Grateful for any info given.

In the Guildford section of Kelly's Directory of Surrey, 1930, the only girls' school mentioned is the County Secondary School for Girls, Portsmouth Road and Farnham Road (page 202).  Archbishop Abbot's School, North Street, seems to have had strong traditions in music, but I think it was for boys only.

The Farnham section (page 175) notes the Girls' Grammar School, West Street, established 1903.

Guildford Cathedral would, potentially, have been a source of support for budding vocalists - at least, for boys; I don't know about girls.

Guildford County School in Farnham Road became a specialist music College in 2004 - I wonder whether it had always Musical leanings
