Edward Lewis born Llanelltyd
« on: Sunday 05 March 23 07:26 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out information of EDWARD LEWIS born Llanelltyd 24 May 1789, who married ANNE EDWARDS on 22 August 1813. His parents were WILLIAM LEWIS & MARGARET (?), who may have originated from Montgomeryshire. I'm particularly interested in establishing where the parents were born, and his mother's family name.

FreeREG has Edwards Bapt as you may already know to William/Margaret.
His Father was a Tailor.

Strangely the image is on Anc but has Parents as William/Elizabeth, Father a Tailor..
May I ask how you came to that pob/dob for Edward.
Does he appear on the 1851 Census?

Similarly on FindMyPast.

The baptism in Llanelltyd on 24th May 1789 has his parents as William and Elizabeth.

There were other baptisms in nearby Dolgellau for children of William and Elizabeth from 1780 to 1787.

Possible marriage of William Lewis to Elizabeth Pugh in Dolgellau on 12th May 1779, but no indication of their origins.

Hi Trish, thank you for your reply - AND a correction to my error with the name of EDWARD's mother, it was ELIZABETH WILLIAMS. Sorry about the confusion, completely my fault - too many irons in the fire  :)

DoB for EDWARD LEWIS attached:

The original document very legible, but here is the transcribed link:

Dear Trish/David,

Another correction - mother of EDWARD LEWIS (my GGG Grandfather) was ELIZABETH (?).

And once again, thank you both.

Alwyn.

Dear Trish/David,

On FindMyPast I found a marriage between WILLIAM LEWIS & ELIZABETH EDWARDS, in Llanelltyd Merionethshire, dated 24 September 1788, which "could" be the link between EDWARD LEWIS & and his parents. What is your verdict ?

It is possible, although all of the following baptisms for parents William and Elizabeth were in Dolgellau.

If there is a will to be found for one, or both, of the parents, wife's name is often her birth name.

Hi David.

Thanks for the reply. Could you send me the link for births of children of William and Elizabeth from 1780 to 1787 ? I can explore that and make a judgement on additional evidence that might provide.

Alwyn.

If using FindMyPast, enter the surname of Lewis, parents William and Elizabeth, location Dolgellau and date 1788 +/- 10.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01s5q/

There should be two in Llanelltyd, two in Llanfachreth, and six in Dolgellau.

The marriage of William to Elizabeth Edward gave his residence as Llanfachreth, which may account for the two in that village. However, there was another marriage there in 1788, to Elizabeth William, although William was from Llanddwywe.

It is difficult to be certain about the correct parents.
