Not sure if this your Johnston - but there is a baptism (Church of Ireland) in Rathdrum, County Wicklow of a Johnston Moreton on 12 Sep 1841 (born 26 May 1841).

Parents Johnston Moreton, Inn Keeper and Grace.

A Johnston Moreton had married a Grace Manning in Wicklow (Rathdrum) in June 1832 (no actual date given) - at the marriage this Johnston's occupation was given as 'Gent'! A Church of Ireland marriage.

No parents names unfortunately, but witnesses were Robert Franklin and Thomas Moreton.

Hi Pennines, thanks for the information, it is certainly my Great Uncle, the Johnston reference is doubtful, he was born in 1825, purportedly in Longford. The census return is incorrect. He was not a widower in 1871, he was still married, his wife Clarinda Gellatley whom he married in 1848 in Clonmel and had a son John,(1855-1877,) died in 1880, I guess he was separated and it was easier to say his wife had passed away when on the prowl for another woman, hence he had another woman on the go, Clara Wylie with whom he had a further child Arthur Morton in 1866, then another legal wife in 1883, Ellen Harrison with whom he fathered my Grandfather, Richard. Complex life he led

Hi Garstonite, thanks for that, I have just found the Banns info yesterday, the fathers description as a sergeant in the Irish constabulary is fiction too, something to provide credibility to the family of his new conquest, Ellen, his father was a Gate Keeper or Wood Ranger in Ireland, described on Johnson's sisters wedding certificate. No record of him being in the Irish Constabulary. I contacted the authority on the Irish Constabulary, Jim Herily and he trawled his records and came up with zilch, another fib which was not uncommon without the copious instantaneously available records we have today.

ADDED: His first wife Clarinda Gellatley, disappears from Census info after landing in Birkenhead, next we hear of her is on her death certificate in 1880.

stevie -- in your original post you say you are looking for George Morton, but what information are you looking for please?

You probably know that he is on a few Liverpool Crew Lists on the Ancestry site - and also on a Family tree on that site (which may be yours of course).

I am not sure what information you are seeking, as you have already found quite a lot about his parents.

A baptism or anything pinning down a location is really what I am seeking, but they may not have joined a church in Birkenhead. the church where their first son John was baptised was a protestant church in Clonmel, so I guess they were of that side of the faith. Also Clarinda, Goerges mother just vanished from census returns until her death, I have tried all avenues open to me but no success so far. It took me 3 years to find Johnston's sister, Fanny, who ended up near Southampton after her husband was discharged from the army following the crimean war, both as servants in a huge hospital for wounded soldiers where her daughter married a medic and produced a family. its a fascinating hobby but compared to some of the RootsChat members I am a real amateur.
