If it’s any help, when I was notified of the death of a Nun, her death was registered in her birth name. That was in England.

It's believed he may have been a married man; known to eventual adopters Sheil.
and there was much talk about emigrating to Australia after George's birth.....
Mother Cathrine lodged with adopters; and fathers name was also included on baptismal record;
the name Best was then struck off birth record, but William left on! Hence the complex names.
The story of Catherine going into convent was often talked about....but origianlly descendants thought it was George Shiels sister ...it now looks like it was HIS MOTHER -Catherine.
The Shiels daughter was not called Catherine...she married and had family.
On a census it was worked out that mother of George (Catherine) was 26 when George was born.
Still need confirmation of Catherines death....so still searching?????
Could Wm. Best and Catherine Mc Elroy BOTH have emigrated  to Australia????

Katherine Mc Elroy was thought to have gone into a convent after giving son up for adoption in 1881. Geo. Wm. Best Mc Elroy (Shiel) was the adopted chid. (my grandfather)
BUT.....some of the stories in family don't add up. Others said that George William Best Mc Elroy's parents went to Australia and left two children with the Shiel family. The daughter in the Shiel family that George Wm. was adopted into.....was their own blood daughter.
William Best the father noted on Baptismal Cert, and mentioned on birth cert (then crossed off) was said to have emigrated to Australia.
Is it possible that C. Mc Elroy and Wm. Best married at a later date, and went to Australia either single or married...and is that why we haven't found a death record for her?

Just wondering .. looking at Freebmd there is a death for a Catherine McElroy in 1936 Vol 8b Page 129 age 82 in Liverpool.  This would give birth year around 1854.
It might be worth seeing if anyone on here might know more relating to this person, perhaps?

Another thought .. I don't know if there might be anything to this but just putting in a free search on British Newspaper Archives there seems to be something about a Catherine McElroy (St Mungo's Glasgow) at a Liverpool Training College.  It seems she is listed with other Roman Catholic women.
Recorded in 'Tablet' London - 4 March 1905
Might there be something of relevance to this?  Perhaps someone on here might know.

That entry is worth looking into..... Thank you so much for your dilegence.

I would love to find out and link the circles so we know for definate what happened to his parents... That would finish the maternal line to grandad...
.....then just need to discover what the errant father (Wm.Best) did with his life after Geo. William Best Mc Eloy (Shiel) was adopted.

Thank you once again for your stirling efforts.

Just another thought - if someone became a nun I wonder if this would be noted in a margin of their baptismal record?
Catholic entries are often good with cross referencing.
Jonw65 has already found the baptism via FamilySearch but this will not include any marginal notes that may have been made.
A copy of the original will be held at Tyne and Wear Archives.  Since you have the date they would likely send you a copy for a small fee.  I think it used to be around £7 if you know actual date required.

Neale, that is brilliant that you found this burial information - just in case this really might be the right ancestor for Doreen.

Doreen, I have found this link on RootsChat.
The information on there might provide you with some further useful lines of enquiry to pursue. I think this might be the convent/home (albeit now closed) referred to in burial entry.
All best wishes for your research on this! :)
