Darcel Family
« on: Wednesday 08 March 23 14:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Looking for help, or advice on where to look, for information on this family, first found on the 1891 census (Jersey);
Pierre Darcel (I believe his middle name may have been Marie) born c 1865 in France
Jeanne (his wife) born c 1861 in France
Sons:
Pierre born c 1886 Jersey
Walter born c1887 Jersey
Lucie born 18th March 1891 Jersey
Lucian born c 1903 - possibly France

I know quite a lot about Lucie as she married Alfred George Barrand (a soldier) in Alderney on the 21st December 1910 - the couple had 4 children and eventually moved to England - they both died in Wolverhampton, as did Lucie's brother, Pierre (Peter).

The 1891 census finds the family in Jersey where Pierre was a labourer, (quarryman) but by 1901, they had relocated to Guernsey, and by 1911, they were in Alderney.

Pierre was apart from his wife and children at that time - he was alone in Newtown, Alderney, whilst Jeanne (Yeanne) was also in Newtown with her sons, Pierre (now Peter, he completed the return) and a son, Lucien, who had been born in France.

I would love to find Pierre and Jeanne's marriage, or even more about them, but they never do reveal where, exactly, in France they were born.

Thanks
Sue

The 1911 census would indicate they married c1884 (married 27 years)

Pierre Marie Darcel married Jeanne Marie Blais in St Helier between Jul 1882 and Feb 1886.
The entry is on page 63 which would fit with a marriage in 1884.

Do you want me to go and have a look at the certificate for you? It was a Non-Conformist marriage so not one that has been digitized. Jersey certificates cost a stonking £30+ from the Registry Office but you can get a photocopy from the Archive for far less.

I'll need to check with Pierre and Jeanne's great granddaughter and see if she is willing to go further.
She's not technically minded...that's why I'm looking  :)

Sue
But thanks so much for the offer

That's fine, I'll be at the Archive anyway and it'll only take 5 minutes - there's no charge for just looking. Jersey certificates do give places of birth and she could decide later if she wanted to buy a copy.

Fabulous!
Many thanks for being so helpful and interested.
She's quite an elderly lady but is fascinated by the fact she has some French blood!

OK here goes
At St Thomas' Roman Catholic Church on 8 Sept 1884

Pierre Marie Darcel, aged 19, Bachelor, occupation Labourer, living in the parish of St Saviour, born in Plouec, Cotes du Nord (now Cotes d'Armor). Father Jean Marie Darcel - Labourer

Jeanne Marie Blay, aged 26, Spinster, occupation Servant, living in the parish of St Saviour, born Plouec. Father Pierre Marie Blay - Roofer

The witnesses were Francis Malory and Désiré Luet

I did a bit of digging in the Brittany records and it turns out that Pierre and Jeanne were distantly related.
