Deaths at Sea query

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help with a strange cause of death that comes up for me:

it reads (handwriting bad) something like ........" vepel loss"...

Many thanks for anyone who has a thought at all.. I'm flummoxed!

Probably vessel loss - if the handwriting is very old a double ss could look like a letter p
