I am struggling with the occupation of Joseph Ballan, Regier? Ster,  father of the mother in the above entry, top of the page June 19 th house 37, Bapt of Karl Franz, son of Ferdinand Jäckel, schnallermacher which I think is buckle maker. I am fine with the rest of the entry.

Thanks

Thanks JustinL,
So some sort of forestry ranger? Would this have been working for a local landowner?

Interestingly he was from Tyssa/Tisá, which is known for Bohemian glass buttonmaking, and his son in-law Ferdinand moved on from buckles to buttonmaking!

My interpretation is that Johann Ballan was the district forester IN Tyßa, in the Tetschner Herrschaft (aka Herrschaft Tetschen), which was ruled/owned by the Counts von Thun since the 17th century.

According to Father Franz Focke, pastor in Königswald, ' In Schönstein befindet sich eine gräflich Thun`sche Försterei.' (http://www.familie-heller.net/Tyssa_Focke.htm)

Thank you for the links, all very illuminating. They had plenty of castles didn't they!
This side of my family is turning up some interesting occupations. Makes a change from age labs and shoemakers :)
Have a good weekend.

You're very welcome.

My 'continental' ancestry is generally far more interesting too.

A little follow up on the Pallan family. I believe the father of Johannes Pallan was also a forester for the Thun family and is credited with discovering the hot spring in Obergrund, now Horni Zleb. The Count built a bath house known as Josephsbad  there in 1770.
