Look up request at Notts archives please
« on: Friday 10 March 23 17:59 GMT (UK) »
HI. If anyone's going to the Notts archives and they have a moment to spare, please could they look up a marriage for me?

The details are:
1816 08 26   William CHAPPELL    and    Elizabeth JEPSON   NOTTINGHAM St Peter

I want to know if it gives Elizabeth's marital status - spinster or widow?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Annie,

I saw earlier that Anc* had updated the Nottinghamshire parish registers but I cannot see that any have been added to at the minute, although they said the rest were due in late spring,  so maybe any time now  :-\

Whilst looking for some of the ones I was hoping for I came across the one you requested.
It doesn't mention Nottingham St Peter on the index, only on the actual page.

Hi
I had a look and the original is there but it doesn't give Elizabeth's marital status but the 1861 census suggests she was a widow
1861 Chappells Farm
William 78 farmer 130 acres Laxton
Betty 70 Nottingham
Mary Ann Jepson 46 daughter in law (step daughter) unmarried Nottingham

1851 census gives Mary Ann  as born 1813
possible baptism 8 Sep 1811 d of George and Elizabeth Jepson.

The witnesses on the marriage are John and Marry Barrow.
I can't see an earlier marriage to George Jepson. I do see a Betty Barrows marrying a William Jepson of Bingham 17 Aug 1806 at Nottingham St Peters  by licence wit Mary Barrows and William Morley.

Comparing the signatures it does seem to be the same Mary Barrows .
Not sure about  Elizabeth Jepson and Betty Barrows because although she does sign ,there is no two letters the same in the two versions of her name.

William and Betsey Jepson do have a daughter Mary Ann baptised at Nottingham St Mary 23 July 1807 so it would fit so long as she lied about her age a bit.(Ancestry has it as Pephran)
Son William buried 3.4.1812
There is a possible death for the husband 26 Feb 1810 as William Heyson at St Mary's
