moved to Soissons, Aisne, France  abt 1897. aged 7 years.
death Unknown.

With the coat like that would he be in the cavalry?

Even today, here in NZ shepherds who ride have coats with loops at the bottom, inside of the fronts. When riding the boots can go through the loops to hold the coat firmly against the legs/saddle.  I guess if you wanted you could pull these flaps back for easy walking.  I have a modern NZ one of oilskin.

The soldier in the original photo is not wearing spurs, so unlikely to be horse mounted.

See charles eugene sonet's fiche matricule with the link given by jorose in your post " may be both died in France" , you ´ll have all the regiments where he was and the dates

Added: the fiche says Charles integrated the 13 th regiment of artillery from 27 april 1916 to 13 july 1916
