jonw65.

Brain fog clearing somewhat.... Peter and Christine, look as though they were married (need to check to see they belong to my enquiry), so think I need to get both certs. Thankyou.
Also, now that brain fog has gone....the Adelina Smith 'could' be a Sister in Law; or Niece belonging to Catherine McElroy, caring for Peter after his wife passed.... as Peter's wife, Catherine, was a Smith before she married. By getting her cer.t too...from 1922 some relative of hers will, or should, have arranged the funeral...which will then catapult us forward with another line of enquiry to follow. So that's three certificates to apply for tomorrow. Fingers crossed that the 'one in a million Smith's', is the Smith that also belongs to us. I'm not a gambling person with cash, but i think this is worth a punt. Do I feel lucky today???? Quietly confident now I have digested the fruits of your research...I believe you have discovered part of the secrets in the Shiel family, that has flummoxed them for years. Fingers, Eyes and Toes all crossed. Will keep you informed Sherlock.

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/DeathNotices/deaths_MCCI

Genuki shows Peter McElroy in the lists as having a Newcastle Evening Chronicle death notice.
There are also some other McElroys and some Shiels listed for the time frame given on this site.

By the way, Doreen have you heard of the Guild Marriage Locator website.  I would attach the link but Kindle is playing up and won't let me open the site at the moment.  This site can be useful for locating some marriage venues so very useful for researching.  Perhaps someone else might be able to attach the link for Doreen?

Thank you Rosie it was very kind of you to add this.  :)   Sometimes my kindle plays up with that site.

Doreen you asked about Catholic Churches in the area.
There is St Mary's Cathedral (big Church over the road from Central Railway Station.)
Also in Newcastle are St Andrew and St Dominic.

Thanks to all the research done to point me into the direction of unravelling this mystery.

I have a good feeling about the three deaths 2 Mc Elroys and one Smith....and up to 1922. At the very least I should be able to trace down G.W.Shiel's, Aunt/niece called Smith, should she be G.W.Shiels... Grandmother's sister or niece, who may have been looking after his Grandfather Peter (after the death of his wife, Catherine). Fingers crossed.

Doreen, if you would like to save your money I could look up death notices for Peter and Adelina when my work hours might permit. You may not need to risk a punt.  ;)
I think I might be able to do this at some point in next 3 weeks but possibly sooner.
The death notices may shed more light on their relationships.
Newcastle City library local studies holds the Evening Chronicle death notices and burial records on microfilm.

There is a published tree.

It shows:
Kate McElroy 25 yrs
Sailing to Queensland from Plymouth on the ship Compta.
Arriving Cooktown 16th January 1882

I managed to check that on here https://www.archivessearch.qld.gov.au/items/ITM18478 but there are no other details.

There is then a marriage listed:
2nd August 1889
Kate McElroy and Henry Musgrove
Index here https://www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au/

Death 24th September 1891, Queensland

‘Rate Ide’ Musgrave
Parents Peter McElroy and Catherine Smith

I found that on here also https://www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au/
