Great finds, Jon.
Interesting that Peter’s address is Park Place which was in the census with Prudhoe Street and Lambton Place.

HELLO RESEARCHERS - your skills and tenacity amazes me. Thankyou so much.
Catherine age 41 sadly . not our Catherine(Grandma of GWMB Shiel)..or. (mother of GWMcE.BEST,SHIEL)
seems as though she dies in same ten year period as GWMBSheils grandmother (and our Catherine..mother of GWMBShiel shown above)

Peter dod 1889 age 59 a possibility; although could have been the spouse of Catherine aged 41 above. Will get his death cert to prove or eliminate whether we are on right track.  Will let you know when I have sight of it. Thanks again.

For Your Information:-

THE suburbs of Pilgrim Street. pages 188-191
Prudhoe Court/Lambton Place; Smiths Court; third, was Park Place on the North Side of houses called Prudhoe Place...... which leads to Percy Street, near the bottom of the Parade.

I've been viewing photographs of old Newcastle and Gateshead;  it's like following in Dickens footsteps of Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist, peeping into their everyday struggle in their lives.  Both informative and addictive. Even following the wrong trail has the excitement of seeing how their lives turned out.   What an honour.

Doreen,
I don’t understand your reference to ‘Shiel’.

The burials given fit with Peter and Catherine living in Duke Street in 1861 with several children.

In 1871, Peter is widowed and living in Spencer’s Court with some of the children..
Is that the right family?

Added
Bernard b 1853 has mmn Smith

Sorry, I understand now re Shiel.

However, do you not think that those burials for Peter and Catherine are not yours? Or have I misunderstood?

I'm applying for Peter's death record 1889 tomorrow.  Not sure about the Catherine. will have to give it some extra thought on the topic. She is thought to be of Spanish extraction !!!  Ole !!!
Complex regarding the Catherines and Shiel connection...
My maternal Grandfather was born in Gateshead to  Catherine McElroy..whose mother was also called Catherine and married to Peter McElroy....they lived in Newcastle. 2 Duke Street.
Grandfather GW Shiel was adopted to the family that his mother was lodging with in Gateshead, called SHIEL Hence his complex name. His father Wm. Best did not marry or support her: George, William Best, McElroy Shiel aka George William McElroy was adopted by the Shiels.
Family stories are varied and don't all tie up. 1. PARENTS WENT TO OZ AND LEFT Geo. Wm. ALONG WITH HIS SISTER IN ENGLAND.  The 'sister' was blood daughter of the Shiels who adopted him.

 2.  Sister went  into convent. NO SHE DIDN'T. SHE MARRIED AND HAD FAMILY. We now think it was his mother may have gone into a convent.  SO WE ARE CHECKING.
Unfortunately there are quite of number of McElroys, Bests with names of Peter/Catherine...so I'm digging all avenues.
At the same time, I was also adopted. Being born to one of G.W.S. daughter's. I Found  my mother... the  mother I was told was dead! LIES. Then told by my birth mother that my father was killed in the war. LIES. AS I FOUND THEM BOTH....but still need to prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that my sister and I had the same father....without upsetting a family. So I'm digging in another patch for another set of facts to be proven.  Complex ancestors..... Happy days.  ::)
Many thanks to all who are putting their minds to my searches. It's very much appreciated.
