Knowles/Knowl/Knolls etc
« on: Sunday 12 March 23 15:20 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the family of Temperance Knowles who married Thomas Lagoe in Warwickshire. I have found a baptism in Leek, Staffs for Pemperentia Knowles b 1697 in Leek to Ricardi and Elizabetha. I have also found baptisms for Richard Knolle in 1695 same parents also in Leek and Gulielmus Nowls b 1705 in Leigh, Staffs same parents names and Franciscus Knowls b 1710 in Leigh, Staffs same parents names. As you can see its getting confusing as I am not even sure the two sets of children are linked. I would like to find out more about Temperance's parents. All help appreciated on this thank you in advance x

Hi,

In terms of the family of the Pemperentia born in Leek in 1697, I've had a look for you and the only document that really fits is the 1689 marriage licence of this couple:

Richard Knolls, of Croxton, and Elizabeth Godhelpe of Roster [Rocester].

The first baptism I can see for this couple is Mary in Croxden in 1690, and then:
John (1692) in Croxden
Elizabeth (1694) " "
Richardus (1695) in Leek
Pemperentia (1697) " "

Richard & Elizabeth seem to have moved around quite a bit so it is definitely possible that they are also the parents of the Leek children (including a daughter called Sarah in 1703/4 and son called Thomas in 1708); I can find no other obvious marriage between a Richard Knowles & Elizabeth in Staffordshire. The fact that there are no children baptised to the couple in Croxden between Elizabeth and Temperance supports the theory that they moved to Leek.

Thank you for your detailed response Queenie. I think the moving around fits into my theory that they may have been Quakers. The man Temperance married was a Lago and his family connects to the mother of George Fox the founder of the Quakers and before that Lagos who were Christian martyrs. I will need to look more at Croxton and the surname Godhelpe. Thank you once again M

I just wanted to say that I used to live in Leek and there is still a Friend's Meeting house there. The Staffordshire Moorlands has a long history with the Quakers and the meeting house in Leek was built in 1694.  There is more information on the website
