Photograph Dating - HEWLETT
« on: Sunday 12 March 23 21:45 GMT (UK) »
The photo attached is of John HEWLETT and wife (name not given) from Gloucestershire, England.
I have father and son both named John, father born in 1792 and son born in 1818.
Can someone please give an idea of the date the photo was taken, so I am able to link it to the correct John?

I would say it was the son, it could have been taken in the 1860s maybe.

The issue with this is that it has all the hallmarks of being 1850's
which would make it an ambrotype, however his waistcoat is fastened the correct
side which would make it an albumin print except for the image quality.
So if this is a copy of the original it could be 1850's or a very close to 1860 albumin print.
Either way if it were the son he would be about 42 & he looks more in his 60's to me.
On balance I would suggest the father.

Many thanks for your replies. Mr. HEWLETT does look late 50's early 60's, so if it is an earlier type of photo it is looking like the father. His wife was 2 years younger.
