Does anybody know where Llan is in/near Yspytty-Ifan ?
« on: Monday 13 March 23 13:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to locate "Llan" near Yspytty-Ifan (spelt several different ways over the years) in Denbighshire. It appears as the abode of quite a few people in and around the 1820s baptismal entries in the Parish Register there. I have looked at several 19th Centrury maps but without success.

Can anybody help, please ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/ideas !

(3) Pughs of 'The New Pale' near Frodsham and Delamere in Cheshire.
(4) Nevills of Llanelly, Llangennech and Felinfoel.
(5) Yaldens of Ovington/Lovington in Hampshire.

Llan is often a township in the parish. There does not seem to be a township of that name in Ysbyty Ifan. Townships listed in "Welsh Administrative and Territorial Units" Melville Richards 1969 are Eidda, Gwernhywel, Prys Uchaf or Tre-Brys, and Tir Ifan. Maybe it is referring to the village itself as opposed to somewhere in the outlying areas of the parish.

In Welsh, Llan usually means the area around the church - the village itself  as opposed to the wider parish.

There's a baptism at the parish Church of Ysbyty Ifan of -
Alice Roberts, 16 Aug 1840, abode Llan, parents Isaac and Jane, father Carpenter.

On the 1841 Census
Township of Tir Ifan, village of Yspytty
Address - Panygloch, No 1
Alice Roberts, age 10 mths, with Isaac, wheelwright, and Jane
Question mark of course - did the family move in the 10mths since the baptism?

The township of Llan is on the 1841 Census. The Census reference for the 1st entry is
HO107  Piece 1403  Book 20 Fol 3a Page 1  Sch 2539
Yet to track back "recent" births on the Llan Township Census entries for their "Abode" in the Ysbyty Ifan baptismal register.

FindMyPast has the baptism at parish Church, Ysbyty Ifan, of John Jones, Apr 4 1841 - parents Morris and Catherine, abode Rhesgoch, Llan

1841 Census
Address - Tir Ifan, village of Yspytty,
Rhesgoch, No 2
John Jones, age 12 weeks with Morris and Catherine.

My cross check between baptism abode "Llan" and 1841 Census address (assuming no change of address in the interim) delivers Tir Afan, village of Yspytty.

It's not marked on the maps, but on 1881 census Rhes goch has 7 houses I think and it is in the vicinity of the chapel and the new smithy (Refail newydd). Rhes = Row, Goch is a mutation of coch mutated coch (red). I think it might be one of the rows of cottages. There is also Rhes Fawr (big or large or great Row).

I think Rhes goch must have some link to to Ifan Goch or the Gwylliaid cochion (red bandits), rather than being a description of its colour.

The map with the most references to named buildings is https://maps.nls.uk/view/101607030#zoom=7&lat=4734&lon=3718&layers=BT

there is also a description on  LDS site describing the townships - Tir Ifan being one  https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/538885?availability=Family%20History%20Library
