203 Derby Road Bootle
« on: Wednesday 15 March 23 14:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I've just got a copy of my birth certificate. It's got my mothers address as 203 Derby Road Bootle. I think it may have been a pub, is that right? Also my place of birth is listed as 50(51?) Balliol Road Bootle. Was this a maternity hospital?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat!

In 1918, a man called George Robbins was killed in action. His wife's address was given as "the Knowsley, 203 Derby Road, Bootle." I can see his wife on the 1921 census and she was indeed a licensee.

In 1939, it was still a public house.

There is a list of Bootle pubs online that has a "Knowsley Arms, Closed and under demolition. Derby Road/William Henry Street." I cannot find any other information online about when this pub closed or even post-1939 when Michael Ealey was manager.

There's a short thread about the pub here:

Someone was born there in the 60s, when Frank & Margaret Oates managed it.

51 Balliol Road was indeed a maternity home. If you search "maternity home 51 Balliol Road", there are a few websites discussing it.

Thanks for the reply :) Yes I still live in Liverpool. I was born in 1958 so at least I know she lived there then. My granparents and my dad lived in the Dominion pub on Bankfield St, the building is still there but its some sort of business hub now. I think all of my family on both sides lived in that area of Bootle.

I was also born at 51 Balliol Road in 1949 never knew it was a Maternity Clinic for Bootle
I got off the 55 Bus on Stanley Rd opposite on my Birthday exactly 26 years later to the day to start work across at St Peter's House 46 Balliol Rd for many years never knowing I was Born across the Road until years later when I started Researching Ancestry and sent for my Birth Certificate
The First Hugh Baird College was built on the site of 51 Balliol Rd
