I’m overwhelmed! Sam, I think that’s the name. Reading quickly through because I should be asleep, is the Millie Plank the person who married George, or is that some one else?

We hoped for a link to Pentyrch. Cas found a Mary Evans 8in Pentyrch who would have been 29; her sweetheart had died age 20. Is that too big a gap at that time?

I’ll continue to research and come back to you with the whole story when it falls logically in place. Thanks. :(

Gwaelodian yes millie plank did marry George vines. The newspaper in memoriam and a message of thanks during ww1 from George Carhart for items he received while home on leave state he was living in mountain ash. Pentyrch is too far from there. Millie is living in Cilhaul tce  mountain ash, so places them in the same village. I'll have a look for w. George carhart pre ww1 to see where he is.

This may be your poem. It was printed in the Aberdare Leader. William George Carhart was living in a bit further out of Mountain Ash, in Abercwmboi by wartime. What is the connection Millie is thought to have with Pentyrch? I would say Millie Plank could be the sweetheart. Pentyrch is too far away to have allowed any courting to have taken place, unless she had gone into service there. Have you any other clues?

Thanks again. Looking for a sweetheart there was a long shot, thinking of
Possible ways  the two places could link. Background to this is that something found by a detectorist in P needs to be returned to the family.  Between you diligent and generous researchers a lot of fresh information has been turned up. We need to try to work out how and  why this item could be there, far from Mountain Ash. Pretty sure you have found the correct names, but we’re having to keep low profile until we’re a bit more sure. When/if we get there, I will post more. Meanwhile, any ideas welcomed! Grateful thanks.

The name is found here. Carhart. You will have seen by now what’s behind this search. Thanks for the suggestions. Bx

Just some background

Looked up a birthdate for Millie Plank (it is her full name) she was registered in March Q 1900 her birthdate in 1939 is 21st Dec 1899 (so about 16/17 when WG Carhart died)

1921 free index & 1939 register Millie and husband George Vines are still in Mountain Ash. No links to Pentrych it seems.

1911 census W George Carhart & parents are living Mountain Ash.  Parents must have moved to Abercwmboi before 1916

Cas, we’re wondering if  Millie was in service at a farm in P. She’s the only feasible link so far.

Our presumed Millie's father Frank / Francis had a brother  George Plank who was living in Foundry place 1891. He was is a few doors the Newbridge Arms, following on from Bridge street - where the famous Ponty bridge is).  In 1901 he's married with a daughter Florance at Bonvislton Rd, Trallwn. In 1911 they are at 78 Tram Rd (street was later re-named and is now as The Broadway Pontypridd).

There were 2 Carhart families in Mountain Ash, but the one was from Cornwall. Milly was in the same school register as one of the daughters, but G W Carhart not named in that register.

Could Milly have met W G Carhart at a Church event ?

One of G W Carhart's brothers who also went to War desCribes his religion as being Plymouth Bretheren, so not sure if the Carhart's listed in the newspaper are the "other" family. However the  Carharts are living in St Illttyd's cottage in 1911 and this is described in one newspaper article as Church Cottage.

The Carharts seem to have mainly stayed in Mountain Ash I think one or 2 of the daughters married and then moved away.

Frank Plank also dies at 45 Miskin st in 1945.

So the nearest person to Pentyrch geographically was George Plank.

Presumably you are in possession of some sort of handwritten original of the poem ?  Or is it a newspaper cutting ?? Could someone have just liked the poem and kept a copy of it?

In case you haven't seen it, there is a portrait photo of GW Carhart in a 1916 newspaper wearing his Seaforth Highlanders Cap.
