France to Guernsey
« on: Wednesday 15 March 23 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Please can anyone advise what (if anything) someone who was born in France in 1846 would have needed to move to Guernsey in the 1850s/60s?

Thanks,

Colleen

The 1851 for the Channel Islands has 520 entries for people born France & living in Guernsey & 476 in 1861

The proximity made it popular with both French & English for various employment reasons.  There was no actual "need" it would be a choice

Colleen - Passports were introduced by The League of Nations in 1920 after WW1 - so - I presume people just jumped on the ferry willy nilly in the mid 1800's - I lived in Jersey in the 1970's and it is still very popular for CI people to hop over to France and for the French to hop over to Jersey /Guernsey etc .
do you have a surname ?...may still be people of that surname still there in Guernsey on someones family tree ?

Thanks for both of the replies! I was hoping I might be able to trace them back in France before they moved to Guernsey but it seems unlikely.

There are two people: Joseph Marais born c1846 in Le Havre, Seine-Maritime, Haute Normandy, and his wife Josephine born c1852 in France (according to census data).

Me and hubby are visiting Normandy in August so it would be great to have any extra info on them really.

Thanks,

Colleen

are you sure his wife was Josephine ?
this may be a daughter ?

Mary Louise /Marias/
Born 13 December 1880 - St Peters in the Wood, Guernsey, Channel Islands
Deceased 25 December 1967 - Gulfport, Harrison, Mississippi, USA, aged 87 years old

Parents
 Joseph Aime Desire Marais 1844-1921
 Marie Francoise Reux 1850-1937

Spouses and children
Married 2 February 1897, Vale, Guernsey, Channel Islands, to Camille Jean Marie Breton 1876-1949 with
F Amelia Breton 1898-1982
F Dora Breton ca 1903
M  Camille Jean Noel Breton 1903-1983
M Emile Louis Breton 1905-1971
M James Emile Breton 1906
............................................
looking at Josephs details  he married Marie Francois Reux in 1907 in Canada - so Josephine may have been his first wife ?
Joseph Aime Desire Marais
Born in 1844 - France
Deceased 7 May 1921, aged 77 years old

Parents
 Arsene Marais
 Aimee Sannier

Spouses and children
Married in 1907, Quebec, Québec, to Marie Laetitia Boulanger Lefebrie
With Marie Francoise Reux 1850-1937 with
F Mary Louise Marais 1880-1967

there are 3 records for Marais in Jersey - AFTER Joseph would have arrived - a Joseph Marais who could be Josephs descendant
born 1872 St Martins ,Jersey who was a Mason /Granite worker
.................

but of course - none of them might be part of your Josephs family
- do you know if your Joseph was a Mason / Granite worker ??

Thats brilliant Judith - Confirms that Marie Louise Marais was indeed his daughter - great research  :)

added - Oh Dear - that link shows NO RESULTS ???   something wrong there  ???
...................................
1865 marriage
https://en.geneanet.org/archival-registers/view/397483/44?individu_filter=8111359

hmmm - that marriage record has the following
Place of birth of husband : Touques, Calvados, France - so not Le Havre - maybe he sailed from Le Havre to Guernsey ??
ADDED just googled Touques to Le Havre is 25 miles - so I would suggest that Joseph was indeed born in Touques - not Le Havre  :)
