Thanks for the "tying up" here.   I may have to revise our website tillwite.com and once I finish the book / booklet I'll have a PDF copy uploaded.
What is the difference you are thinking here ?  ( I am missing it .......  )

The newspaper article reads as if T J & F have equal numbers of shares, are both  directors, receiving the same salary.

Ah I see, yes, thank you.  The "start date" of the limited company is good but we have no idea what date in 1876 the business started.... guess that wasn't advertised in the newspapers ?!

No, I did see something which was the T&W business taking action against a business called Sykes.   Do you mean something about the winding up of T&W as a partnership ?

Checking Historical Directories online the earliest reference I can find is -

Slater's Directory of Manchester and Salford 1877-1878 (Part 1, Alphabetical)
THO - TIM
Till and Whitehead, ironmongers &c, 143 Chester rd. H
Till Thomas, ironmonger, &c (Till and Whitehead), 143 Chester rd. Hulme

They do not appear in the 1876 edition - including late entries recorded under "Additional" after the Directory was compiled. If the firm was created in 1876 probably didn't meet the  deadline for the 1876 Slaters?

Their 1879 entry in Slaters reads
IRONMONGERS - Till and Whitehead (wholesale - also engineers', machinists' and ironfounders' ironmongers), 94 Chester Road, Hulme,

Slaters' 1876 Directory for Chester Road shows
No. 141 James Forrest, baker
No. 145 Frederick Dutton, grocer

No. 143 is not listed.

This is so interesting. The business was established in 1876 ( it was on the side of the building and I have no reason to disbelieve that ) and seems from this that the business started in a small way from No 143 and then they moved to 94 and expanded ( next door ! ) from there.   I have seen 1960;s photos of another building, separate from the 94 Chester Road block, I assume also on Chester Road, where fireplaces were sold from but do not know the address unfortunately.

There's an advertisement in the Crewe Chronicle, 20 July 1970 for "Till and Whitehead, Ellesmere Street, Manchester"
