In reply #5, Osprey ruled-out the Llangennith connection.

The Llanrhiddian William appears to have been buried on 19 Feb 1774.

Ergo, William of Port Eynon (24 Sep 1757) must be my man. Hurrah!!!!

But, hang-on a mo ............. the position regarding his parents is confounded by a baptism 3 months earlier, viz:-

24 May 1757 in Port Eynon, Philip son of John PHILLIP

so there must be 2 mothers involved, unless Philip was baptized a very long time after his birth and, just to cloud matters further, I've not found another John PHILLIP marriage which could fit into this time frame.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have just discovered a different date for the bap of William:-

24 Aug 1758 son of John PHILLIP in Ort Eynon (sic)

This date, transcribed by FindMyPast, is confirmed by the original image, and eliminates the  conflict with the  bap of Phillip PHILLIPS, son of John, on 24 May 1757, so William and Phillip were brothers, and there is no need for me to find another John PHILLIP marriage.

I conclude, therefore, that the FreeReg transcription is wrong, and that the parents of 'my' William must be John PHILLIP & Elizabeth RUSSEL who married in Oxwich, 21 Dec 1741.

Is that right?

Just to keep you all in the loop, I've reported my 'Ort Eynon' problem to FindMyPast and, so far, they've found over 1000 instances of this error, which they are in the process of correcting which, they state, 'will take some time'.

So, if you've had difficulty finding events in Port Eynon, this might be the reason
