William PHILLIP ca 1757
« on: Thursday 16 March 23 16:46 GMT (UK) »
William PHILLIP was bap 24 Aug 1757 in Port Eynon, father John

Who was his mother? I have 2 options:-

25 Jan 1756  John PHILLIPS  m  Elizabeth JENKINS  in Llangennith (on FindMyPast)

26 Mar 1754  John PHILLIP (weaver) m Margaret GWYNN (widow) in Llanrhidian (Margaret Phillips collection of Llanrhidian Deeds)

Can anyone help me select which of these is 'mine' please?

William named one of his daughters 'Elizabeth', which might have been after his mother, but that was also the name of his mother-in-law.

Yep - saw that one and thought it was a bit too early, even though Oxwich is much closer to Port Eynon than Llangennith and Llanrhidian. During the war, we attended church in Oxwich and Penrice; no-one ever thought of going over to Port Eynon!

I note that there were only two baptisms at Port-Eynon : St Catwg : Parish Register, in the period
1750 to 1765, both father John, I guess there were two John's about?

Philip PHILIP   Baptism   26 May 1757   Glamorgan

William PHILIP   Baptism   24 Aug 1757   Glamorgan

Complications like that I do not need!

I was only looking for the baptism of William. You're right; Philip and William must have had different mothers unless one of the dates is wrong?

this baptism probably rules out the Llangennith John & Elizabeth
Baptism 27 Dec 1757 Sarah daughter of John & Elizabeth Philip

Sorry about that. I guess it was two separate John's.
If William was John's only child there, is it possible they moved elsewhere?

Osprey,

You're right, the mother of Sarah in Llangennith cannot possibly be the mother of William in Port Eynon.

John and Margaret in Llanrhidian seemed to have stayed there, baptizing:-

09 Oct 1754   John
07 Aug 1757   Mary
14 Dec 1759   Thomas & William
01 May 1762   Elizabeth

so they cannot be the parents of the Port Eynon William, which raises the question - is he 'mine' or should I replace him with  the Llanrhidian William?

Looking back over my notes, I see that all the research on this branch was done on-site, mostly at the West Glam Record Office in Swansea back in the 80's and 90's. It's only now, after an anomaly was found in an adjacent branch, that I am re-visiting the subject using on-line sources, and finding that they are not as complete as I thought (e.g. FindMyPast is missing much of the Port Eynon PR). Whilst I am still confident I have the correctly-named parents for Elizabeth PHILLIP (William PHILLIP and Ann DAVID), and in those days felt similarly about William's parents, I'm now far from sure. Which William is 'mine'?
