School records East End Primary School and Bishopmill Primary School
« on: Friday 17 March 23 16:48 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone familiar with the school records held in Elgin Library. I accessed them a few years back when Libindx was in the school but did not explore whether there was a fische before 1915.
I am researching Alexandrina and Isabella Marr born 1904 and 1901. The record I have is entry 220 and 221 1st March 1915. I was wondering if there are any entries for these two girls prior to 1915. They, along with mum and dad, are recorded as living in Crieff in 1911. Mum, Jessie, died in Elgin on 19th January 1915. In a round about way I am trying to find what happened to Alexander Marr, father. You might think this is an odd way of doing it but I have explored other ways without success. He is not mentioned as deceased on his wife's death certificate. Her brother registered her death. Marriage certificates for the daughters all state father deceased by 1918.
Although Alexander was born 1870 I wonder if he joined up and the family came back to the mothers birth place then died.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. This query has been ongoing for several years.
Thanks
Betty

On the 1911 census you mention I note Alexander & Jessie have four daughters age 6 – 14.

JESSIE MCKENZIE   BIRTH   MMN - WILLIAMSON   1867   URQUHART (MORAY)

ALEXANDER MARR MARRIED JESSIE MCKENZIE   1896   OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT)

JESSIE MARR   BORN ABOUT 1868   DIED AGE 47   WILLIAMSON   1915   ELGIN

Do you know when and where Alexander was born and his mothers maiden name?

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thanks for your reply.

I believe Alexander was born 29th May 1870 and his parents were William Marr and Mary Ann Taylor.

As far as the availability of school records is concerned, you'd be better to direct your question to Moray Heritage Centre.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for your suggestion. You are probably right as they will know what is available.

No trace of Alexanders death before 1918, have you found any of his children on the 1921 census?

Is this the family, some bits seem a bit odd?

WILLIAM MARR   MARRIED    MARY ANN TAYLOR   1860   OLD MACHAR ABERDEEN BURGH

MARR   ALEXANDER   MOTHER TAYLOR   1868   DRON, PERTHSHIRE

1861 – OLD MACHAR ABERDEEN BURGH - 168/2 22/ 27
I presume with mother & siblings?

WILLIAM MARR 21 MARY 23
ANN 54, JAMES 32, ROBERT 18, HELEN 16

ALEXANDER MARR   BIRTH   MOTHER TAYLOR   1868   DRON, PERTHSHIRE (SEEMS STRANGE)

MARY ANN MARR   DIED age 34?   ADAMS   1868   OLD MACHAR ABERDEEN BURGH

It looks possible that William remarried rather quickly but you may know this?
WILLIAM ROSE MARR   MARRIED   CHRISTINA BEGRIE      1868   INVERURIE

1881 72 Gerrard St. St Nicholas, Aberdeen – No clear trace of 1871 census.
William   MARR   Head   42   Railway Engine Driver   Kintore, Aberdeen, Scotland
Christina   MARR   Wife   53   -----   Logie Buchan, Aberdeen, Scotland
Christina K.   MARR   Dau   18   Tea Bag Maker   Logie Buchan, Aberdeen, Scotland
Alexander   MARR   Son   14   Message Boy   Old Meldrum, Aberdeen, Scotland
Jane E.   MARR   Dau   9   Scholar   Old Meldrum, Aberdeen, Scotland

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thanks for your reply but not sure if this family is connected to mine.
William Marr died in 1910 in Kelvin and his wife died in 1918 in Barnhill Poor House.

Two of Alexander’s unmarried daughters and a granddaughter were recorded in 1921 visiting someone in Urquhart. Alexander was born in Aberdeen. His wife's family came from the Urquhart area.

Thanks
