What supporting evidence do you have that they went to Canada? 

If they had young children - whilst it wouldn’t be unusual for the father to go on “ahead” of the family, I find it strange that Martha would go with him as well.

The descendant I correspond with says his uncle told him about it.

His uncle must have got it from somebody else - who in turn probably got it from somebody else - as we are looking at around 185 yrs ago
