Many thanks for these links.  I had found a Royal Commission Report on the voyage when I was trying to find the ship's passenger list: https://atojs.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/atojs?a=d&d=AJHR1883-I.2.2.2.15  I had also found an obituary for their sponsor Captain John Humphreys in Papers Past: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TC19100406.2.60.19.2?query=Captain+John+Humphreys&snippet=true

Papers Past also has reports on a young William Gosnell being convicted of various crimes in New Zealand.  I think this may well be the son William Frederick Gosnell (1877-) but have not found a way to be sure. 

William Frederick Gosnell (1877-) married Rose Maud Love in 1909 and had several children with her.  The New Zealand Police Gazette, 14 Sept 1921, p 581 lists a warrant for his arrest for nonpayment of child support.  I have not found a record of him anywhere after that and would like to know what happened to him.  When his wife died in 1938, Papers Past indicates he still had not been found: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19380406.2.3.3?end_date=31-12-1938&items_per_page=10&query=William+Frederick+Gosnell&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1938
