William and Martha Evans
« on: Sunday 19 March 23 01:36 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for more information about the parents of Margaret Evans. I only know their names.

The earliest known record of Margaret Evans shows her marriage to Henry Beddow/Beddoe in Aberdare in 1820. Parents are not named in the marriage record and Henry's family were witnesses. Records show five of their children were baptized at Pontmorlais English Wesleyan Methodist Church on High Street in Merthyr Tydfil. Baptism records from 1828, 1831, 1834, 1836 show her parents as William and Martha Evans. A baptism record from 1830 shows her parents as William and Martha Williams (a clerical mistake but maybe a clue). Margaret died of cholera in 1844 in Merthyr Tydfil at age 44. There is no indication of where William and Martha Evans might have lived.

Some background: Henry Beddow was born in Staffordshire and moved to Merthyr with his family as a child (his father worked as a brickmaker and must have come to Merthyr for work). The Beddow family might have come from Shropshire originally.

Hi,

Just a thought, but have you found Margaret on the 1841 census? She should be on there if she died in 1844. Her census entry will at least tell you whether she was born in Glamorganshire.

I can see the 1844 death reg for Margaret (Beddow) but can't see any 1841 entry.  Do you have her death cert confirming her age?

Did Henry report the death?   If not - is Margaret shown as "wife of" or widow

What was her address on the death cert?

I have never been able to find them (Henry Beddow/Beddoe and Margaret) in the 1841 census. I searched again today, broadening my search parameters, but no luck.

Here is an image of Margaret's death record:

She was 43 (not 44 as I wrote). She was wife of Henry when she died. He died in 1871. The informant of Margaret's death record was a next-door neighbor.

Here's all my info on Margaret:
