David Houghton - m - Harriet Gower 1846 Norwich

I agree entirely with you regarding all these "Houghtons" and their family trees  are  where I am at the moment.
Seeing these entries on the 1871 census just makes me want to know more.

As far as John & Frederick are concerned  they could be grandchildren but using the GRO has failed to find them using the known ages and place of birth.

Interesting Harriot is saying shes widowed in 1861 as David still alive.

I can see Gower being mistaken for Gore especially if Harriet could not write her name.

Based on the baptisms of John and Frederic it would appear David does not acknowledge the children as his, Harriet must have stepped out on him.

NOTE
There is a D. H. in the workhouse at Heigham age 75 widower - confectioner born Norwich that could be David.
Also a W H age 17 shoemaker born Cambridgeshire beneath D.H.?   Could be a coincidence

Thank you both for the info on  John & Frederick. It certainly looks like the family split up.

I have found the baptism image on Ancy.. and by zooming-in the name looks more like "Stephen" rather than David who Harriet was married to.

I think I have also found the birth regis for Frederick in St.Ives, Hunts 1858 both with mmn=Gore (ties in with trish's lead)

I haven't had any success in finding a census for David in 1861 with son William. Any chance you please let me know the details?

If you have ancestry put  D for the christian name and H for the surname.

birthdate 1786 living in Heigham Norfolk. It will bring up the details from the workhouse.

"Stephen" was the possibly the name of John and Frederic's father, Harriet was still LEGALLY married to David Houghton so the parish clerk would not list the reputed father without further explanation.

David and Harriet are together with her sons and their daughter Agnes 1871.

Very grateful to you.

However, in the 1871 for Heigham I have found, Harriet is only with her two boys. Are they in another census I haven't found?

I have to agree re Stephen being a possible father.

edited; Just found John Houghton's marriage in 1876 wherein he lists his father as "Stephen" Houghton.
