Lost Marriage
« on: Tuesday 21 March 23 11:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

Can anyone help with finding a marriage please. I'm looking
for a Elizabeth Lloyd marrying John Massie/Massey in the Much
Wenlock area about 1871/1873. She is a Lloyd on the 1871 census
and a Massie on the 1881 census, with a son Moses, who is 9yrs.

Under which surname does Moses' birth appear to be registered?
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

The only Moses registered at that time has the Mother’s maiden name of DAVIES.

Correction, now found registration with mmn LLOYD

Hi both
Moses is down as a Massie and all later children are Massie too.
On the 1881 census Elizabeth is a Massie living with John.

No luck in locating a marriage.  Could John and Elizabeth be simply cohabiting? I see John is twenty years older than Elizabeth, so there is the possibility he was previously married and had a wife still alive.

Hi

I think that must be the case, especially with the age difference.
Elizabeth does use the Massie name on the later censuses though.

With the children all registered as Massie, you would expect Elizabeth to continue using the name.

I have tried to find John on an earlier census but no one appears with the occupation if butcher.

Perhaps someone else will have more luck with them, I must leave it for now.

AS for the occupation "Butcher", have you checked FindMyPast baptisms?

Moses' baptism 28 Sep 1873 at Alderton has John's occpn. as "Farmer". This is his occp. on Eburt's and Vincent Edgar's baptisms.
His occupation on the other six (Jacob, Ralph, Reho, Charles, Henry Oscar and Sam Austin) is "Labourer". On the 1991 Census it's "Farm Labourer"?

1871 Census - have you managed to eliminate John Masey, age 39 occpn Bailiff, born Shipton from your search.
