Confusion of parents Any Help Appreciated
« on: Tuesday 21 March 23 13:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
Confusion reigns with my Dorchester folk.

I have found the following baptisms and burials relating to who I hope is my ancestor and her siblings. The person of most interest is Elizabeth Bartlett

BAPTISMS

Edward Bartlett
Baptism 2 Sep 1798 Dorchester All Saints James Bartlett,Mary

Mary Bartlett
Baptism 2 Sep 1798 Dorchester All Saints James Bartlett,Mary

Jane Bartlett
Baptism 1 Jan 1800 Dorchester All Saints James Bartlett,Mary

Anne Bartlett
Baptism 3  Feb 1802 Dorchester All Saints James Bartlett,Mary

Elizabeth Bartlett
Baptism 16 Jan 1804 Dorchester All  Saints James Bartlett,Mary

James Bartlett
Baptism 17 Dec 1809 (born 4 Apr 1807) Dorchester St Peter James Bartlett,Jane

Jane Bartlett
Baptism 17 Dec 1809 Dorchester St Peter James Bartlett,Jane

Susannnah Bartlett
Baptism 18 Jun 1815 Dorchester All Saints  James Bartlett,Jane

BURIALS at Fordington St George

Anne daughter of James and Jane Bartlett 12 Jun 1803

Rebecca daughter of James and Jane Bartlett 24 Feb 1806

Edward son of James and Jane Bartlett 7 Feb 1810

Jane daughter of James and Jane Bartlett 15 Jan 1812

Elizabeth married William Rickard and on their children's baptisms she is shown as the daughter of James and Jane Bartlett not James and Mary?

I've not found a marriage for James and Mary or James and Jane, although judging by ages , James and Jane would b about 21 in 1797.

The baptisms of the children all seem to follow on so I am confused with the wife's names

Any ideas welcome

Regards
Fred

Have you found burials for James and Jane (with ages stated)?
Was James a butcher in Dorchester?

A James Bartlett (butcher) took on an apprentice in 1804.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge

Hi
yes James was a butcher , mentioned on Susannah's  Baptism and 1841 census

Jane buried 1823 aged 48

James 1842 aged 70, but in census 1841 aged 60

Ages were rounded down to nearest age with 0 or 5 on the end in 1841, An age of 60 could really be between 60 and 64.  But many people didn't accurately know their age. Age stated at death could be inaccurate, it depends on what the informant knows or thinks it is.

Yes he may even have been 65 or 66 in 1841, I am for now putting James and Jane at about 21 in 1797 (i.e both b about 1776) due to all the facts mentioned. And then a  marriage in 1797 and first born in 1798. Assumptions I know , but a starting place.

This however still leaves the main problem of James & Mary versus James & Jane

I wonder if you had considered that the mother’s name might have been Mary Jane and she used Mary a bit and then Jane?

I wondered that as well, but haven't been able to find a marriage to a Mary Jane. Although I have only looked close to Dorchester.

I'm struggling to find James in 1841.
The james who was buried in 1842 was from the Union (Workhouse) but belonging to All Saints Parish,  according to Dorset OPC transcription
