Sutherland 1962
« on: Wednesday 22 March 23 16:31 GMT (UK) »
I’m looking for information on a newly found distant ancestor. Piqued my curiosity given that I had never before heard of him.

Archibald Sutherland b 1903 Plantation d 27 September 1962

I have his lair record in Linn Cemetery extension where he is buried with other members of his family, his wife Kate & his mother in law, also Kate. He married in 1932 in Cathcart.

Lair record gives his parents as Eric Sutherland & Mary Gray.

Address is given as Croftside Ave, Glasgow.

I realise that this is relatively recent history and I don’t want to stray into living ancestors but as I said before, I am curious to find more about this previously unknown ancestor who was a distant relative.

Eric Sutherland married Mary Gray in Plantation in1894.

Children include:

Chalmers Miller (female) b 1897
Jessie Gray b 1900
Mary b 1901
Archibald Gray b 1903

The 1901 census shows the family at 43 Plantation Street, Glasgow:

Eric Sutherland, 39, dock labourer, b Hopeman, Morayshire
Mary Sutherland, 39, b Glasgow
William Sutherland, 14, grocer's assistant, b Glasgow
Jennie Sutherland, 13, scholar, b Glasgow
Jessie Sutherland, 1, b Glasgow
Mary Sutherland, under 1, b Glasgow
Elsie Main, visitor, 23, b Hopeman, Morayshire

There was probably an earlier marriage to account for William and Jennie.

Thanks for the replies.

I had come across the other members of the family, yes there was a second marriage.

It was Archibald that was proving a mystery going forward and I wondered if anyone might have him in their family tree to flesh out the person.

SUTHERLAND   ARCHIBALD GRAY   GRAY   BORN   1903   PLANTATION
Plus 9 other Archibald’s born Scotland 1902 – 1904, one other mother Gray.

SUTHERLAND   ARCHIBALD GRAY   59   DIED   1962   CATHCART (GLASGOW)

Archibald is on the 1911/1921 census returns in Plantation, the latter as Archie.

As you say he married KATE RITCHIE 1932 IN CATHCART.

Looking at the birth registrations it looks possible that they may have had one daughter but that's a maybe?

RITCHIE   KATE ELIZA KELLY   KELLY   BORN   1902   PARTICK

Parents: John Ritchie & Kate Eliza Kelly married BLYTHSWOOD 1900

Kate is on the 1911 census with her mother and sisters & 1921 with her sister Agnes Jane. You would need to look at the censuses for details.

SUTHERLAND   KATE ELIZA KELLY   76   KELLY   DIED   1979   GLASGOW, PARK CIRCUS

However you may know all of this?

Thanks so much for your reply.

I had made some of these links. Frustrating when it is recent history that one knows so little about.
