John Copperthwaite and Caroline Webb
« on: Wednesday 22 March 23 18:47 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a marriage record of a John Copperthwaite 1817/1819 born in Hampshire and Caroline Webb 1825 born in Reigate Surrey. Their 1st child John Copperthwaite 1851 was baptized at St Dunstan and All Saints church Tower Hamlets, Stepney. I have tried Ancestry, Findmypast etc., and the uk governments BMD records with no luck and was wondering if perhaps there is no such record and I'm wasting my time looking for one. Any ideas as to where to look?
Thanks

Welcome to RootsChat!

To start this off, here is the 1861 census for John and Caroline:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2ML-K4FS
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2ML-K4VK

It is easier for us to investigate when links are provided, as it saves time and prevents the duplication of research.

In cases where an obvious marriage cannot be found, my first thought is generally that one or both parties were already married and so were not free to wed. Have you delved deeper into their pasts and searched for possible previous marriages?

As Queenie said - it is possible that one of them was previously married -- ie Caroline - so she wouldn't have married under the surname of Webb. Having said that - they may not have married at all. I am unable to find an appropriate marriage though.

You may already know this - and apologies if you do - but there is a baptism for a John Copperthwaite on 16 Nov 1817 in Yately, Hampshire - parents Thomas and Hannah.

John and Caroline do have a daughter named Hannah - and a son named Thomas (seemingly their youngest son, which is unusual under common naming traditions.)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

If the oldest son was born jq 1851 you would have thought they would appear together in 1851 census.

It doesn’t help with John & Caroline’s marriage it’s looks as if she remarried

Caroline Copperthwaite, widow, Bethnal Green
Father Joseph WEBB deceased
Marriage 14 Jul 1873 St James the Great, Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets
Spouse:    John Holcom, widowed, sailor

Caroline Webb
Baptism 25 Sep 1825 Reigate, St Mary, Surrey
Father:   Joseph Webb Mother:   Sarah

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Edit to add there’s another marriage

Caroline Copperthwaite, widow, Bethnal Green
Father Joseph WEBB deceased
Marriage 25 Nov 1876 St James the Great, Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets
Spouse:    Epharim Block

Both Caroline’s full age and made their mark (x)

Blimey, thanks for the reply's, I wasn't sure I'd get any let alone 3/4 so quickly.

I didn't see any previous marriages but I think Caroline might have married John Holcom in 1873 and Epharim Block in 1876. Not sure though. She was with her sister in the 1841 census, Maria and Henry Weller.

I was thinking John might be the John from Yately with Thomas 1775 and Hannah 1780 as parents but was hoping for more concrete evidence before pursuing that further.

I have found a 1861 census but not a 1851. John are you saying there is one under the name COPPITHWAITE? I don't see anything on Ancestry or family search.

Thanks for all your help.

Baptism Date   6 Apr 1851
Baptism Place   Stepney, South Australia, Australia
Baptism Place (Original)   St Dunstasn  Stepney
Birth Date   16 Mar 1851
Father's Name   John Copperthwaite

maybe I'm looking in the wrong country?

That is clearly an indexing error. If you look at the original document you can see that.

In 1851 they are at the same address as John's baptism, but with the surname WHITE.
