You may already know this - and apologies if you do - but there is a baptism for a John Copperthwaite on 16 Nov 1817 in Yately, Hampshire - parents Thomas and Hannah.

That looks like the right family - number of the offspring marry in London.

Baptisms at Yateley, children of Thomas (Labourer) and Hannah COPPERTHWAITE
•   Sarah 1803
•   Abi 1804
•   Hannah 1806 – married 1832 City of London to William DUFFIN
•   Thomas 1808 – married 1838 St Giles Cripplegate London to Mary WILLIAMS
•   Elizabeth 1811
•   Robert 1812
•   William 1815
•   John 1817
•   Martha 1820 – married 1844 Putney to William SHRUBB
•   George 1823

Marriage at Yateley 29 Oct 1802
Thomas COPPERTHWAITE to Hannah BARTLETT (1780-1874)

Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

In 1851 they are at the same address as John's baptism, but with the surname WHITE.

Well found Debra - I wonder why they are using a different surname  ???

It looks as if John & Caroline had another child after John

Great finds  folks - super sleuths indeed.

Regarding the 1851 census - I wonder if the enumerator only heard the END of the surname Copperthwaite - and thought he heard 'White'. (Or he couldn't spell Copperthwaite!!)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Ok now my head is really hurting.....

What I see is a John White son of John and Caroline White born 19 Dec 1848, bap Feb 14 1849, living at ("Hare st"?)("Harris crt"?) Bethnal Green.

And a John Copperthwaite son of John and Caroline Copperthwaite born 16 Mar 1851, bap 6 Apr 1851, living at ("4 Harris crt"?) Stepney. (indexed wrong as Australia)

Not sure about the address.

Is it possible that Caroline was married to a John White like others have suggested? Or is John White and John Copperthwaite the same person? Why would you have two boys and name them both John?

And is there such a place as Harlsey Hampshire?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Trace

Oh and John and Caroline had 6 kids, John 1851, Hannah 1855, Maria 1858, George 1859, William 1861 and Thomas 1863.

Ok make that 7 kids, I see what you mean Ladyhawk, there is a Caroline born 1853, died 1854.

Might this be the birth entry of John White

WHITE, JOHN       mmn BROWNING

and his parents marriage entry

Sep 1848   Stepney    2   464

WISEMAN    James

Caroline Browning father William Browning
Marriage 25 Sep 1848 St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, Tower Hamlets
Spouse:   John White father John both have same occupation ?? Weavers

Edit to add

I wonder if this might be John & Caroline White on 1851 census, there's no son John born c1848 with them so perhaps he died

1851
Globe Road, Mile End Old Town, Stepney, London & Middlesex,
John   White   Head   1826   Silk weaver   Bethnal Green, Middlesex
Caroline   White Wife   1827   Silk weaver's wife   St Catherines, Middlesex

John WHITE was 2 weeks old on the 1851 census.  The birth registration for your John was posted earlier.

COPPITHWAITE, JOHN       WEBB
GRO Reference: 1851  J Quarter in STEPNEY  Volume 02  Page 564

I think it is just confusion with the name on the census as all other details match.

Debra  :)

I agree with Ladyhawk, not connected to your family.  I believe it is Hare Street on the WHITE baptism, there were weavers' cottages there.

Who suggested that?

Sorry still not clear on this. Is there a 1851 census? I can't find it if there is. Could someone send me a link or directions on how to find it? Or better still send me a copy of the actual census.

Thanks
