Military Cross citation, service in Korea.
« on: Friday 24 March 23 13:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction in order to find a Citation for a Military Cross Award.
The Gentleman in question is 2nd Lieutenant John Bowler of the 1st Bn The Welch Regiment, who saw active service in Korea.

There is also some question relating to a second award but no mention can be found of this

I am trying to find out anything about the award and his service for a friend, sadly John Bowler recently passed away.

Many thanks as always for any input to my request,
Best Regards as ever.
Frank.

Cannot spot as yet anything related to the award of the M.C., but did spot -

The Daily Telegraph, Sat, 1 Mar 1952
CASUALTIES IN KOREA
"The War Office last night reported Sec. Lt. J. Bowler, Welch Regiment, wounded in Korea ..."

Daily Telegraph, Jun 21 1952
Sec. Lieutenant J L Bowler, 20, Welch Regiment, a descendant of the inventor of the bowler hat, has received an immediate award of the M.C. in rescuing wounded in Korea.
His mother, Mrs Constance Bowler, Ashley Drive, Walton on Thames, Surrey, said last night "William Bowler, my husband's great, great uncle made a billycock hat, the original "bowler", for the then Earl of Leicester.
My son, a National Serviceman, educated at Cranleigh, sailed for Korea and has spent seven and a half months at the front since then. The citation mentions his extreme bravery and tactical ability. His father, Mr L W H Bowler is a hat manufacturer in London".

Love the bowler hat connection.

There's a report in the Daily Mail, 21 July 1952 that includes a photo of Lieut Bowler. It mentions his father won the M.C in WWI and also the ancestor inventing the bowler hat.

The announcement should have appeared in the London Gazette in July 1952, but I can't immediately find it. The Gazette site isn't the easiest to search, but you need to select the option to include the Supplements, along with the man's name plus a bracket of dates (for instance 1950-54) for the Korean War.
His personal number was 417045. His full name is John Leslie Bowler.
As Shaun has said, his citation is available at TNA. Page 3 provides the full citation for why he was awarded the MC.

Checking out John's father, L W H Bowler, reports of his winning the M.C appeared in the newspapers April/May 1918 and a report of a bar being awarded appeared early 1919. These reports include descriptions of how the awards were won and confirms the M.C was gazetted 22 Apr 1918.

Seems "L W H" was also something of an athlete.
