As a beginner a few months ago I remember the excitement of discovering Family Search.

So many of my relatives were on there, because someone else had apparently done all the research work already.

I was thrilled to discover I appeared to be related to the landed gentry.

It didn't take me long to come back down to earth!

Now the harsh reality is that I have some horrible brick walls going back not particularly far and I have relatives with some very, very common names. JOHN SMITH being one of them.  ;D

I do sometimes make corrections on Family Search though, and add notes on there, to try to help others.

We're on the same page regarding the familysearch website.

Here's my gripe:-

FamilySearch has 1629 US data files and who knows how many from other countries.  And they're all free.  Free.  Who the hell cares about the blasted family trees?  If they offend you, don't look at them.  Use FamilySearch as a library because that's what it is.

The website I found most useful when I initially started my family research was the HUGH WALLIS website that listed all the British Counties and the Batch Numbers that covered the churches.

I have my tree on Tribalpages a site I hear very little about these days, has it fallen out of favour for some reason I’m not aware of ?

Not that I know of, perhaps because nobody is moaning about it is why you have not heard anything.

Good thinking 😀. It works for me, only invited people can view. And I’m very picky having been bitten in the past.

"It doesn't matter"

Dear me!  Doesn't say much for the supervisor does it!   ::)  What a lackadaisical way to approach family history.
A bit off-topic, but reminds me of a piece in the paper some years ago from their regular restaurant critic.  He ordered a fish dish from the menu.

Critic - Is this salmon wild or farmed ?
Waiter - Don't know, I'll ask the chef ....
(exit to kitchen, leaves door ajar - offstage )
Waiter - customer wants to know if salmon is wild or farmed ?
Chef - I dunno, doesn't make a difference, does it ?

Restaurant scored a full set of 'nul points' in the write-up.
