Winifred Coyne c1845-1921
« on: Sunday 26 March 23 16:34 BST (UK) »
Struggling to find info on the origins of my great grandmother Winifred Coyne, probably lived in Ballynahinch Barony in North Connemara area, Co Galway. Born sometime in the 1840s, possible parents John, Michael or Daniel Coyne and Barbara Lacey or Mary Gallacher, uncle possibly W Burke (info taken from 4 separate pension applications made in 1916). Winifred married my great grandfather in Glasgow in 1869 and lived in Glasgow until she died in 1921.

Thank you both. I did post a query re Winifred before and received info about the pension applications. I also have marriage and death documents plus a poor relief application, all relating to her life from 1869 onwards, where details re her age and her parents' names vary. I've done my DNA with Ancestry and have a number of genetic cousins connected to the Coyne family, none of whom appear to have any knowledge of her. I am still unable to trace Winifred's early history. What year was she born? From answers she gave, it appears between 1842 and 1849. Who were her parents? Did they die in the Great Famine? When did she arrive in Glasgow? She doesn't appear to have known any of these answers. Her pension applications were unsuccessful as they couldn't trace her.

So was she born after the 1851 Irish census?

It's possible she was born after 1851, but according to her marriage certificate in 1869 she was 22 and according to her poor relief application in 1891 she was 49. Her death certificate in 1921 puts her at 72, so by calculation she appears to have been born between 1842 and 1849. However, it seems
she had very little basic information about her origins and if she was born after 1851 that might explain why she couldn't be found on the 1851 census. I'm not sure that will help me find her, but it may be a brick removed from the wall, thanks.
