Lincoln was an electoral district. He was living in St. Catharines. If he had been murdered, that would have made the newspapers, and I'm not seeing it any available newspapers.  When did Barbara die?

Found a newspaper article in the Buffalo News in November 1949 describing a car accident between Philip Dorrington, aged 50, of Alexander Street, St. Catharines, sexton of St. Thomas Anglican Church, who was riding a "whizzer motorbike" and a car.  Fractured his leg in three places.

That may have been the end of his career at sea.   You might try contacting the church to see if they have any further info about him.
