Just found Elizabeth 'Searl'  in 1841 with the eldest 3 children all shown as Searl - in Wokingham (another teenager present also named 'Searl').

The eldest children are shown as May in 1851.

Doesn't help with the original query - but adds to the story!

Rosie - the Edward you found in 1841 has a wife Elizabeth. Interestingly an Edward May and an Elizabeth were having children in Heckfield - (where James says he was born on the 1851 census).

However none of these children baptised to an Edward and Elizabeth in Heckfied, include a James.

Unless there's a mistranscription, or I am missing something. (That's not unknown!!)

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.
