Hi All, I am researching the activity of my grandfather Sapper Alan Sylvester Owen Wild (1918-2010) who served in WW2 as part of the Royal Engineers 190 ROC (Railway Operating Company). I have various items of memorabilia from his possessions including photos, personal diaries, letters and badges. One of the items was a partially completed medal application form which he never sent off. I have completed a recent medal request and received these which is lovely. I intend to request his service records in April once that becomes free to do so and then the war diaries for his company. However, i ask for any one who has any information at all on this company and in particular their movements and specific locations in Persia and Italy to reach out and inform me. There is a post from a user on here from a few years ago and a reply from another user who stated they had taken photos of the war diary for this company. I would love to know more about their movements and hope someone reading this can help me in some way, no matter how small.

I am in the process of digitising my grandfather's diaries also which would I am sure be of interest to other people regarding the day to day life of this company and there is lots of info about trains also. There is also many of his friends and colleagues mentioned by name and some interesting stories of others present so I will post that all online somewhere down the line when all is done

I think it is very important we learn about history of our family to pass onto future generations and keep their memory alive.

The Imperial War Museum has three items relating to 190 Railway Operating Company, two written memoirs and an aural history:

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80033258

No doubt once you have finished transcribing your grandfather's diary the IWM would appreciate a copy.

This thread on WW2Talk has a breakdown of the Company's establishment, from which we learn that it had 50 firemen, 50 engine drivers and 82 brakesmen /shunters. Plus all the support staff of course.

I assume that you are already aware that the operating companies just ran the trains and they relied on a railway construction company to build/repair/maintain the track. In the case of operations in Persia, 190 ROC was partnered with159 Railway Construction Coy. More about them both in this thread: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=742458.0

And lastly, you mentioned war diaries. Here's a link to the unit diary for 1943:

Thanks for the reply Andy. This is the all the info I could find also to be fair. I guess I was hoping someone might have gotten copies of the war diaries to save me the hassle. Fingers crossed someone might but if not, I’ll be heading to London!
