You can search here for a possible birth
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

It is free to use.

Henry , in 1921, is also from Kilkenny so perhaps related or just have a shared background.

There's an army record on FindMyPast for a Nicholas Hanrahan, No. 5907, born Waterford, Co Kilkenny. Address at time of attestation "2 Bridge Street, Bargoed".

There may be more than one record?

And that one is possibly the one in 1911 census so maybe ignore my Irish 1911 census!

There is a birth registration on Irish Genealogy for Nicholas Hanrahan, 9 Mar 1877, Union of Waterford, Co. Kilkenny. Father Michael, labourer, mother Mary, maiden name Martin.

He gives his age as 34 when attesting in 1915.

Oh, so I might have the right one in the Irish censuses, after all.

That is the birth I thought a possibility. ;)
