What became of Sarah?
« on: Friday 31 March 23 17:39 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find out some further information as to what happened to one of my G Grandfathers 9 sisters, and the only one I've failed to trace thus far.

Sarah E (possibly Ellen) Reid was Born in Portsea, Hampshire in 1859. Her Father, at the time, was a sergeant in the Cheshire Militia Called Isaac & her Mother was called Amelia. The last document I can find her on is the 1871 Lydford Census, aged 11 & Living with the rest of the family in "Barracks." Her father at this time had become a Warden at Dartmoor Prison.... and that's it, no further positive trace.

The only possible clue i might have, is that she may have died in 1877 at Plymouth, but registered as Ellen Sarah Reid. The location & age would be right, as her father had died in 1872, and the family had returned to Plymouth, the original Family location before Isaac had been posted to Portsea. "Find-A-Grave" also has an entry & burial location of this person at Ford park Cemetery, but alas no photo of the gravestone, if one exists.

I was wondering if someone could please try and find any further information on her. Either to confirm the death record & Burial is the person i'm looking for, or if indeed she went on to Marry.

Regards

Stewart

Thanks Rosie

Yes her Mothers maiden name was Tapp.

The Burial detail you found is the one I've seen. However i'd just like to try & confirm that "Sarah Ellen" Reid is the same person as "Ellen Sarah"Reid.

I was wondering if the death of an 18 year old girl was newsworthy enough to find it in one of the local rags. or if there was an obituary.

Regards

Stewart

There is no birth reg for an Ellen Sarah Reid - but reg of a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874

You could buy a pdf version of the death cert to see who reported the death

......aha! i had the answer all the time  ::)

Just looked at the 1881 census & her mother had remarried (Burley) and was living with quite an extended family, albeit with out Sarah at "18 Higher street."

You must have inspired me Rosie  :)

I've just noticed your answer Carole, thank you.

Still would like to see if it made the local papers though, if anyone has access as im sensing a sad tale.

British newspaper archive lets you 'search' free of charge, you can also get a couple of copies as a free trial.  The information on that site is the same as the newspapers on FindMyPast.  I did not see anything, maybe you can
