The marriage (3 April 1787)  shows the witnesses as  Jno Rees and Wm Rees. David of Llangunner and Margaret of Llanelly

If she was circa 65 in 1841, she would be 11-ish at marriage. She could have fibbed about her age on the census.

Questions:
Do you have a list of their children?

Do you know if David left a will?

Is the younger David, aged 25 on the 1841, their son?

Thanks for all the feedback and sorry about the confusion about the date of the Will of her grandmother. As the Will was from 1788and it states Margaret was married to David then they must have married 1787 or earlier, then the marriage I have found seems the most likely.

I have found a Will for David https://viewer.library.wales/729764 written 1832, it states he died 10 May 1846. For some reason the Will was not proven until 1849. No children are mentioned. Although it gives a death date 1846 I can’t find an appropriate death, of the right age, registered in 1846 in Llanelly or Carmarthen, which is strange. The nearest I can find is David James who died Llanelly in 1844 aged 89.

I have looked for children but can’t find any obviously baptised to them.  The David age 25 with them in 1841 therefore doesn’t appear to be a son, maybe he was a nephew. Assuming he survived until 1851, if he can be found then he may provide additional clues, but I am sure there will be many candidates.

I suspect Margaret’s age in 1842 is just wrong, they can be way out in 1841, if she had survived until 1851 we would have a better idea but I have been unable to find her in 1851

Thanks Gadget but I am no Wales expert at all !

I think the earlier Death Reg is likely be Margaret as David born c 1811 Llanelly seems to have taken over the Farm.
His Father in Law is there also.

Regards,
Trish :)

Can you please clarify the above . Thanks

I'm looking at the will now, Roy. It takes a while to go through it. It might have taken a while to find the will as written so much earlier than his death. Odd though!

The info above appears to be the David in 1841 Census with David age 80 and Margaret age 65.

Hi Trish

(Sorry our replies crossed over)

I have worked it out. Thanks for this useful information. So, although there is no baptism, it looks like David and Margaret did have a son David who married Mary Bowen in Llanddarog on 4th Dec 1846. His address was Plasbach and his father was David James a Farmer. In 1851 they were then living at Plasbach along with Mary’s father Wm Bowen.

It also shows the inaccuracy of the 1841 ages, as in 1841 it states David was 25 whereas in fact according to the 1851 census he was nearer 30 in age

This is the most likely death for David snr. The quarter is correct for a May death

and Margaret:

Quote
Name:    Age at Death (in years):
   JAMES, MARGARET        82
GRO Reference: 1851  M Quarter in LLANELLY  Volume 26  Page 502

   JAMES, MARGARET        77
GRO Reference: 1851  S Quarter in LLANELLY  Volume 26  Page 423

Most likely the first one if she was dead before census.
