James Wheeler and Harriett Pepper
« on: Saturday 01 April 23 13:46 BST (UK) »
After more than 20yrs research, I have found that I have collected information about the wrong JAMES WHEELER (abt 1780?). My ancestor was par of the 1820 British Settlers to South Africa. His wife, HARRIETT PEPPER was born in Folkestone, Kent on 17 Aug 1774. They married on 20 May 1804 in Christ Church, Southwark, Southwark. Up to now I have researched the James WHEELER's from Wiltshire and have found sufficient documentation indicating that none of them married Harriett PEPPER. As a direct descendant of these two, I have just about completed their descendants in South Africa. I moved to the UK in 2022 and would really like to link my research to the family in the UK. Due to a fire on the 17th May 1942, the marriage register entries from 1803 to 1806 seems to have been destroyed. I have been able to obtain a damaged copy of their Banns. I believe that the missing marriage certificate would provide info on them and their families.

Sorry but there won't be a marriage certificate for this point in time.  Prior to the commencement of civil registration in July 1837 you will have to rely on the entries in the parish registers.  It is unlikely that these registers will show the parents of the two parties as this info was not required at this time.

If Harriet had a second marriage to William JESSAMINE in 1832 and a daughter baptised in 1833 then biology tells you that it is highly unlikely that Harriet was born in 1774.

What proof do you have that Harriett was born at Folkestone

ADDED I can see the baptism at Folkestone but there is also a possible marriage for her in 1805 Folkestone to a John Bateman

Have you discounted the Harriet Pepper who was born 21 Oct 1786 and baptised 26 Oct 1786 at St Margaret, Westminster - her mother was Hannah no father named.  It needs to be checked but as she was born in London it is more likely than the Kent records you are looking at

Just for background, is this your James Wheeler, applying to emigrate?
