new to Genealogy (12 weeks) Great grandmothers parents
« on: Saturday 01 April 23 18:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the names of my Great grandmother.  She was born Maria Jackson on 23rd Feb 1853 married 09 aug 1873  died 25 aug 1929.  Born in Manchester England and died in Ramsbottom England.  I would have thought with all this information it should be easy but for some reason i am stuck.  I have got her marriage certificate but it says father not named.  Any pointer would be gratefully accepted!!

Hi Ploppy123

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Can I ask, what is the source for the birth date you mention for Maria? You have 23 February 1853?

There is this possible 1861 census entry for her in Spotland, Lancs.:

Jas Howarth 61 carter b. Spotland
Sarah Howarth 65 wife b. Spotland
Robt Taylor 22 boarder greengrocer's assist. b. Heywood
Maria Jackson 7 Boarder b. Manchester
Rg 9; Piece: 3050; Folio: 13; Page: 20

I noticed that in the household before this, there was an Elizabeth Jackson aged 12 and born in Manchester. She is showing as Nurse in the Clegg household. Could she be connected to Maria I wonder, or just a co-incidence?

Deleted as reply #13 a better fit

I haven’t followed this through yet

But in 1871 at Robbin Hood Inn, Colne are

Emmanuel Holmes 42 licensed victualler born Colne
Martha A Holmes  wife, 42
Some children
Harriet Jackson Sister in Law, unmarried, 39, general servant born Colne

RG10/4157/147/ page 12, schedule 60

Unfortunately in 1861 this same family also have Harriet with them, but no Jackson children.

But there is a Rennie Jackson age 1 with his Jackson grandparents (Robert & Ellen) and he can be found with Harriet in 1881.

Just adding to that 1861 census entry from earlier.

By the time of the 1871 census, this Maria Jackson is still living in Whitward, Spotland. Still showing as a boarder and now living with just Sarah Howorth, aged 77 and by now widowed.

Maria Jackson, age 17, is showing with the occupation of weaver. I see that at the time of her marriage to Joseph, Maria showed as a weaver.

In case it turns out that there is a connection.

The 12 yr old Elizabeth Jackson b. Manchester from 1861, is still in the same town of Whitward, Spotland for 1871. Showing as a boarder, aged 21 and weaver, in the household of Robert Dunderdale.

Possibly totally wrong but there is a Whitworth connection  :-\
However, if that date of birth is right, then it doesn’t work.

Maria Jackson, b 23rd December 1853, baptised March 1854
Parents John, a Waterman and Maria
GRO shows a possibility with mother Buckley.

There is an Elizabeth (and twin, Mary Ann)  born 1849 and baptised 1853 with the same parents.

1851 2226 /167/34
Manchester
John Jackson 44 yrs Boatman b Whitworth
Maria 35 yrs b Manchester
With children, including Elizabeth and Mary Ann, both 1 years old
